The amendment, however, added the abortion drug mifepristone to the list of Schedule I Controlled Substances — the same classification as drugs like heroin and LSD.
Substances are designated Schedule I if they are found to have a high potential for abuse and have no accepted medical use or are unsafe.
Rep. Ray Salva, the amendment’s sponsor, argued mifepristone, which is also known as RU-486, met those criteria.
“What other drug could be more harmful (than one that takes) a life?” said Salva, a Sugar Creek Democrat. “It is germane. RU-486 is a drug that takes a human life.”
Salva’s amendment passed 113-36 on a roll-call vote.

just..wow. :boggled:

Although we don't get as much press as other states, Missouri has been rather quietly and inexorably eroding abortion access for some time.
Demanding providers upgrade facilities, restricting licensing, restricting access to drugs, etc, etc.
Planned Parenthood has been at legal war with the state for as long as I can remember.

We tend to have the rather liberal, Democratic big cities, and the very conservative, Evangelical "downstate", which has dominated state politics for some time.

Disgusting. Next they'll try to reduce drowning rates by banning lifevests and swimming courses, for then to declare it a sin to fall over board.

'Ah, yes, we could teach these little buggers how to swim, and we could give them lifevests, but both of these are sinful in the eyes of the LAWD, and telling someone to be careful not to fall overboard, for then to give them a lifevest, is like telling a criminal not to rob a bank for then to give him a gun! What's that? Statistics show swimming and lifevests reduce the drowning rates? So? Why should I be forced to do something that goes against my religious beliefs?!'

Face it, it's the same logic.

Yes. Quite. You want to reduce abortion, give comprehensive sex ed classes, distribute free condoms, support real crisis centers (not the fundie 'let us talk you out of abortion and then dump you on the street' ones)... in short, to reduce abortion rates, do everything the fundies declare sinful. To increase abortion rates, do as the fundies do (abstinence-only sex ed, condoms sinful, etc.).

PBS Frontline ran a pretty good doc on this some time ago called The Last Abortion Clinic. Seriously, the method these people use to curb abortion are just disgusting.

Oh, and happy chicks' day, everyone ;) .

ETA: Does this mean they'll also ban all drugs used to execute prisoners? I have a feeling they won't.

Again, this disgusts me.

indeed. south dakota too.

i am just trying to understand why an abotion isnt considered a medical use?

What a bunch of crap. Pretty soon American women are going to have to travel up here to get an abortion.

In my opinion, most of those people who decry abortion rights as "killing babies" are more concerned with punishing women for having sex than they are for saving lives.

I think it is more than "opinion" because if you scratch the surface of most of the anti-abortion crowd's nonsense positions, what you get is "she should have kept her legs closed."

Making abortion illegal does not stop abortions - it reduces the number of legal abortions.
Let's invent the self-insertable IUD or something?

And those who don't make their sentiments pretty clear by comparing sex to running a red light, robbing banks, etc.

And if that's not good enough, there's this (from Wikipedia):

It can also be used as a treatment for obstetric bleeding.

My best friend went to a clinic to receive the morning after pill when her original contraceptive method failed. She's married, late twenties, only she wasn't wearing her wedding rings. She said the doctor came in and said, "So I guess you were out clubbing last night and thought you'd bang the first hot guy you came across and run in here for help when you realized what you did, huh? Well don't let me see your face in here again. Slut."

Honestly. She sat there and took it because it was the only clinic that was offering the pill but that is ... something. I wonder why doctors can get away with that when no other business person could?

arent there medical ethics boards she can talk to? I mean i know that medical liscenses can get revoked for unethical behavior... there has to be someone that can be reported to.

It could also be a big fat-assed lie designed to deter fence sitters from going to an abortion clinic. All's fair in love and war when working for the Good, Truthful, Kind Lord.

Anti-abortion fanatics picketing and threatening abortion clinics remind me of Muslim fundamentalists in the Middle East, and the Communist youth in European countries.

Anti-abortion fanatics could at any time dig their heads out of the sand and realize that their methods do nothing significant to reduce abortion rates. Yet they insist that if only the teens are magically convinced not to have sex, there'll be no need for those sinful condoms or abortions.

Communists could at any time log onto the Internet and read up on how Communism simply cannot work. Yet they keep insisting that if only the people is magically convinced that they need to work for the common good, Communism will work.

Muslim fundamentalists must know that peaceful resistance is a far better way to get international sympathy and support, not to mention concrete victories, than are suicide bombings and other war crimes. But two examples are the demonstrations in Burma, which generated a worldwide, and Gandhi's campaign to drive the British out of India.

Yet the Christian fanatics choose to keep picketing clinics and pushing abstinence-only education. The Muslim fanatics choose to keep blowing themselves up.

As much as I detest war crimes, I'd actually like to meet a jihadist and ask him...

Why?

Whoever has not seen the clips from the The God Delusion TV programme where a fundie preaches demonizes abortion needs to instantly do so.

"If you don't wrap that rascal, you get no nookie" was an old school approach.

Why did that go out of style? The improvements in condom construction and variety since I was in high school has been impressive. They even have one that is like "a thousand tiny fingers urging her to let go!"

Don't those folks advertise in Cosmo?

Let's invent the self-insertable IUD or something?

Inserting an IUD into a woman who has not had children is like getting punched in the nuts. Also, IUDs increase the potential for STDs so they're recommended iff you're in a monogamous relationship.

Other than that, I have to say I love my IUS (IUD + low dosage of hormones).

One reason I can think of is that medicine is a business, but one where the "proprietor" tells the customer what s/he wants or needs, instead of the other way 'round. That must make a difference.

Failing that, perhaps a few words between her husband and father and the "doctor" after closing time.
