Mississippi pardons criminals

It's pretty strange, Barbour seems to have pardoned about as many people as the three former Governors (5-10) until the last days of his term. Then he went insane and pardoned another couple hundred?
What's up with that?
Do you suppose some of them had connections to money?

Is there a link back to any major "Christian" prison ministry?

Maybe there is an organized crime link.

Oddest story I've heard in quite some time.

I can only think of two explanations up front: dementia, or he was under some sort of threat or duress.

Again, quite odd - and distressing.

They worked in the governor's mansion, eh? I wonder what they've got on him.

Maybe that's why it's such a "tradition" for governor's mansion workers to get pardoned. As soon as they get there, they start digging up the dirt on the current governor.

what I find most disgusting about some of the pardons is that they were granted to dirtbags who are likely to reoffend.

Creeps like David Gatlin are a hazard to any woman who ever has any kind of relationship with them. Domestic abusers are sociopaths, and need extensive treatment to overcome this problem. Rarely do they ever get so well-squared-away as they seem.

And that bloaty toad Barbour wants them to regain the right to vote and "to hunt."

Freakin' brilliant, you damned redneck. That means that the monster can legally own another firearm.

And people wonder why I show so little respect for most republicons.

Maybe the way that Gatlin became a trustee was by enrolling in the Baptist Theological Seminary that Barbours wife got set up at Parchman. How mqany of these prison epiphanies are for real? Conversion to fundamentalist Christianity is one of the reasons that Huckabee gave for pardoning Maurice Clemmons, and we know how well that worked out.

And both Huckabee and Barbour are among those sometimes floated as possible POTUS or VP candidates. What a freak show the GOP has become.

Lefty I don't think this is representative of Republicans in government, but it's true that many seem to be loose cannon.

I can think of a few I respect. Judy Baar Topinka here in Illinois, for example.

So, it's not all of them, but I really don't know why the sane ones stay.

In years past, the governor has explained that it is tradition to pardon prisoners assigned to the mansion.

So the obvious strategy is the heck with the parole board, just get yourself on the mansion staff and in 1-2 terms you are free?

I have lefty on ignore, but morbid curiosity had me wondering if he would attempt to make political hay from this aberration.

I guess I have my answer.

On CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, they showed a video of Martin Savidge interviewing Anthony McCray, one of the convicted murderers pardoned by Governor Barbour. He said that the gun just went off accidentally when she grabbed for it, and when questioned by the reporter he explained that he didn't shoot his wife in the back, but the bullet went through her. Except that every witness says there was an argument, he left, came back with a gun, and then shot her in the back as she tried to get away from him. He also admitted it in court.

One can only imaging the tale he wove for Governor Barbour, who he knew would pardon him if his story was convincing enough. I think parole boards are trained to read the case files and see through stories like these, which is why McCray's only chance for release was to get assigned to work at the Governor's mansion.
