Oso said:I think you've all missed the reason for concern. It's not that the Bush team was involved, to whatever degree in staging this photo op, it's that when it became problematic Bush immediately tried to push it onto someone else.
BUT THE NAVY IS THE ONE WHO REQUESTED IT, THE WHITE HOUSE JUST MADE THE SIGN, THE NAVY EVEN HUNG IT UP. SO HOW DID HE TRY TO PUSH IT ON TO SOMEONE ELSE? HE JUST DIDNT SAY THAT HIS STAFF MADE THE SIGN.
If he had just said something like, "Well the mission for those fine troops that were about to return to port was accomplished, and we're all very proud of what they've accomplished." it would have been fine. But no he immediately tried to deny any responsibility.
ACTUALLY HE DID SAY THAT, OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES. WHEN ASKED, HE SAID THAT THE 'MISSION' REFERRED TO WAS THE CARRIER'S MISSION, NOT THE OVERALL MISSION OF THE WAR. HE STATED THIS IN THE SAME PRESS CONFERENCE THAT EVERYONE IS USING TO SAY HE 'PUSHED IT' ONTO SOMEONE ELSE.
General Wesley Clark called it correctly, "I think it is outrageous. He blamed the sailors for that and it is something -- an event -- that his advance team staged. I guess that next thing we are going to hear is that the sailors told him to wear the flight suit and prance around on the aircraft carrier. This is a president who does not want to take accountability." my emphasis
Actually, he properly 'blamed' the sailors cause it was their idea. His team didnt 'stage' it, they just made the sign. Seeing as how white house staff probably were in charge of almost all the setup for the speech, ie the props, where everyone would be and how everything was visually presented/orientated, it doesnt suprise they made the sign to ensure it fit in with all the other 'production' of the carrier speech.
Sorry about the caps, I dont know how to bold. I saw a segment on this on the daily show last night. Parts of it were really funny, but it kind of made me mad that they misrepresented the whole situation by not mentioning that the sign was the carrier's idea. Now, I know the daily show is a satire show and they constantly misrepresent things for a laugh, but this segments was totally based on one big misrepresentation, ie it wouldnt have been funny, or at least the parts making fun of bush for 'lying' about it wouldnt be funny, there were other parts of the segment that were hilarious but really had nothing to do with whether the sign was spin by bush or the navy's request. To be specific, the show made fun of how Ari F. said something like: "well, the navy put up the sign, not us" and the show went on to make it sound like Bush/white house was trying to say it was the Navy's doing just cause they physically hung up the sign even though the white house was the one who wanted it. Which if true, would have been hilarious, however, when you add in the fact that the Navy had the idea for the sign, and the white house only made it, the whole joke gets kind of turned around on the show and other making the same stupid claim. Ie, the daily show was doing exactly what they were making fun of bush/white house for, at least sort of.
