Seems that since you have to set aside a full day for a Windows OS re-install, this missing paperclip is not going to be on your top-priority list! As you said -- you'll work around it. I'm fresh outta suggestions...

I agree. It's not worth it. But you know the feeling you get when a stupid machine dares to mess with you and you get angry and start yelling at it with a booming godlike voice: "THOU SHALT NOT MESS WITH RIGHTEOUS MAN'S MIND, YOU DEVIL'S DEVICE, ELECTRONIC SPAWN OF SATAN, LEST I SMITE YOU WITH THE BASEBALL BAT I KEEP OVER THERE BEHIND THE DOOR!"

I ain't takin' no ◊◊◊◊ from no goddamn machine.

Try view>layout> and make sure show preview pane header is ticked
