Since good old Huckabee didn't have his own thread in the new sub-forum, and the other threads on him in general USA politics weren't on this topic, I figured I'd start one for him here. Granted, I don't expect him to stay long in the primaries. He is just too far down the list in the clown car race. That being said....

Why would anyone (and this goes for most of the Republican field on anthropomorphic global warming for that matter) trust this guy on anything in regards to running the country? He can't get the most basic of facts straight:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astr...out_volcanoes_wrong_about_global_warming.html

If he thinks a singlevolcano spews out more CO2 than mankind does in a year, and can't bother to fact check that super easy to look up claim and see it is clearly false, why should we trust him on things more complex like the economy? I often wonder why people vote for these idiots and think they know how to run a country. It is one thing to say it'll be too costly to make drastic changes and fight off global warming. That is a more complex issue. But to make claims like Huckabee did, ones that can be so easily proven false, and expect us to take anything else coming out of that mouth as fact, is beyond me.

The quote was "[Mankind] probably does [contribute], but a volcano in one blast will contribute more than a hundred years of human activity."

This is one of those zombie lies that gets repeated by right-wing anti-science types over and over. I've lost track of how many times I've had to debunk it.

Just to play Devil's Advocate.
If he tells the truth at this point, he is eliminated from the race. It is possible that he knows it is serious and that he has to be elected before he can talk about the seriousness. On the other hand, he might be as venal and craven as he appears in the above exchange.

Yeah, I get that the Republican primary is partially filled with science denying and who can be the loudest about it. You seem to be correct in that he is probably lying in order to have a chance at getting elected. According to this article, Huckabee was for acting on climate change before he was against it:

http://grist.org/politics/meet-the-climate-deniers-who-want-to-be-president/

"One thing that all of us have a responsibility to do is recognize that climate change is here, it’s real. … I also support cap-and-trade of carbon emissions. And I was disappointed that the Senate rejected a carbon counting system to measure the sources of emissions, because that would have been the first and the most important step toward implementing true cap-and-trade.” But Huckabee totally flip-flopped after the rise of the Tea Party and anti-Obamaism reshaped the GOP.

Sometimes I think I would rather watch pre-FDA era sausages made than watch voter focus groups explain how they choose a presidential nominee.

The thing I find most interesting is that a canned campaigning opportunity of a one-hour weekly show on the fair and balanced network,... and he parlays it into nearly getting shunted off to the undercard debates.

I always expect Mr. God to walk out the door and die when he's hit by the actual sunlight. His unbridled shock on his weekly show with the results in 2012 was really quite indicative. He just believes that his cozy little group of bible-thumpers is "the real world". Sometimes I think he's perhaps a genuinely nice person with delusions, but then I remember that Oral Roberts had that same sort of charm with his believers and may have been one of the most evil persons in history (IMHO).

The God Thing is also interesting. Does God just love a good fracas? It seems he's told at least four of the Top 10 that they should run for president. Apparently, he hasn't told them they're all going to win, 'cuz that'd make for an interesting debate question..... "Uh, Candidates 3, 4, 7, and 9... you have all said that God is going to put you in the White House. Which of you are actually talking to God and which are just hearing voices from your dental fillings?" (No, not you, Mr. Trump, sit your bushy-headed ass back down.)

Here's the FactCheck.org look at the numbers:

http://www.factcheck.org/2015/07/huckabees-hot-air-on-volcanoes/

This actually makes me more concerned, not less.

So that means, humans collectively are responsible for nearly 125 times as much CO2 entering the atmosphere every year as volcanoes.

What about particularly large eruptions though, the sort that don't happen every year? Still doesn't begin to come close:
But Huckabee said “in one blast,” so what about when there is a single, large eruption?

The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, in the Philippines, was one of the largest in modern history. According to the USGS, this eruption released 0.05 gigatons of CO2, or about 50 million metric tons. Again, humans emit more than 30 billion tons of CO2 every year, let alone every 100 years.

Another famously large eruption, the 1980 explosion of Mount St. Helens in Washington, released even less CO2 than Pinatubo, in spite of its fearsome and deadly local impacts. That eruption released only about 0.01 gigatons of CO2, according to the USGS.

As the USGS says (using 2010 CO2 emissions), you would need 700 Pinatubo’s or 3,500 Mount St. Helens’ eruptions, to match a single year of human-caused carbon dioxide emissions. To get to 100 years of human emissions, as Huckabee said? That would take 70,000 Pinatubo or 350,000 Mount St. Helens eruptions.

What's more, volcanoes tend to eject sulfur dioxide too, which has the opposite effect from CO2. A huge eruption will actually be more likely to to cool the planet, at least in the short run.

This is from the Wikipedia article about the Krakatoa eruption of 1883:

Global climate

In the year following the eruption, average Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures fell by as much as 1.2 °C (2.2 °F).[9] Weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years, and temperatures did not return to normal until 1888.[9] The record rainfall that hit Southern California during the “water year” from July 1883 to June 1884 – Los Angeles received 38.18 inches (969.8 mm) and San Diego 25.97 inches (659.6 mm)[10] – has been attributed to the Krakatoa eruption.[11] There was no El Niño during that period as is normal when heavy rain occurs in Southern California,[12] but many scientists doubt this proposed causal relationship.[13]

The eruption injected an unusually large amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas high into the stratosphere, which was subsequently transported by high level winds all over the planet. This led to a global increase in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration in high level cirrus clouds. The resulting increase in cloud reflectivity (or albedo) would reflect more incoming light from the sun than usual, and cool the entire planet until the suspended sulfur fell to the ground as acid precipitation.[14]

Huckabee is now suggesting that fetuses be protected by the 5th & 14th ammendments, and that US troops and the FBI be employed to protect them...

At a campaign stop in Iowa late last month, the former Arkansas governor said that he would invoke the Fifth and 14 Amendments to give fetuses the rights of people. When he was asked if he would use U.S. troops or the FBI to back the guarantee of equal rights for fetuses, Huckabee replied, “We’ll see, if I get to be president.”

Republickers have not in the 35 years of their existence given me a single reason to assume any of them is not venal, craven and corrupt and does not loathe anyone not them.

Maybe I'm naive but I don't see Huckleberry as either one of those things. I think that he is so very (and genuinely) besotted by his god beliefs that his reality just does not comport with "real" reality. The consequence is ideas and policies that just don't match much of the non-hyper-Christian people.

He seems like a nice man - making him entirely inappropriate for President.

Quite appropriately summed up by his reaction to a 10-year old girl from Paraguay having been raped and subsequently become pregnant. While every normal person would advocate an abortion, Huckabee went on CNN to declare that a abortion would result in two victims rather than just the one...

There was some discussion in another thread about how a person who bases their "pro-life" position on the idea that the fetus is a human life could make exceptions for rape or incest- the fetus is still a human life, is it not? (Making the exception the choice of people who would deny it to the mother for her circumstances- those people are still pro-choice, they just arrogate it to themselves and rob it from the person they then saddle with the responsibility) Anyway, you kind of have to give Huckabee credit for complete consistency here. The problem, of course, is that that's the kind of consistency that is really only inflexible and unforgiving dogma- the "reality" of religion.

I think that Huckabee will be throwing in the towel within a few days.

I just heard on the radio how Huckabee promised that if he was elected President, then he would move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In my experience, when a person running for President makes that promise (and I have heard it made before), then it indicates that the person is question is quite desperate and is playing his very last political card.
