Michelle Bachmann:"We are in the last days."

... if his brand of "lunatic Christianity" recognizes the folly and inappropriateness of people like Bachmann and Palin, then good on him.

Agree that some follies are more seriously and immediately dangerous than others, but a folly is a folly and we would be better off without all of them.

Also it was a good move not using any pagan symbolism on that other site. Only because they would have taken it, claimed it as their own and made a holiday of it. All the while denouncing the evils of pagan beliefs.

If the end is near, then running for the White House is not the answer. The White House occupant would be high on the Antichrist's hit list. Especially if she's one of those stubborn, annoying Christians who can't read with comprehension.

The highlighted part is the answer to your post..... they have no logic....so how can you expect them to behave in a logical manner. If they did have any logic then we won't be having any problems....they would not be following a book written by morons from 3000 years ago.

I seem to remember people saying stuff like that back in the 60s.

Aside from your interpretation of things that are going on these days, do you have any corroborating opinions, at least, from people in the relevant fields ?
Meh, people have been saying things like that for far longer.
The Earth is degenerating today. Bribery and corruption abound. Children no longer obey their parents, every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching.
That one is supposed to be ~48 centuries old

Much as I like to sit in the peanut gallery watching Michelle Bachmann being ridiculed I'd like to know how much of what she says she literally believes to be true and how much is rhetorical device or rallying cry.

In the audio clip provided it sounded to me like she was trying to create a false sense of jeopardy in the way that many evangelical preachers do. The sense I got from it was that she feels that time is running out to correct the ills of the country (which are presumably secularism, liberalism and homosexuality). If she genuinely believed that the end of the world was coming in the next few days literally then I'm reasonably sure that the rhetoric would have been different.

I'm not saying that I'd be comfortable having such a religious zealot in charge of the world's only superpower but that taking all utterances as the literal truth is unrealistic in a business like politics. If I tried hard enough, I'm sure I could come up with some dumb quotes from any politician.

Then again, if she comes out and states quite categorically that she expects the end of the world to come in the next n years (where n is a small number) then I'll admit I was completely wrong.
Somehow it seems to add up to wondering whether Bachman is an irresponsible lying demagogue or a thoughtless fool, if not both. Neither alternative appeals to me very much.

So, you're saying that, even if it were pointed out to her that the White House is not exactly the place to be during the time of the Antichrist, she would still continue to mindlessly seek it out? Like an automaton stuck on White House aquisition mode?

Yeah, that's consistent with numerous experiences I've had with Christians. If she's like some Christians I know, she wants to make damn sure her "end is near" prophesy comes true, just to smite the naysayers. After all, if God didn't want her to end the world, He wouldn't put her in charge of all those nukes and then give her PM..er, I mean a migraine, would He.

Exactly!

This is one of the reasons I cite for why I maintain that they will eventually and inevitably win.

Our problem as skeptics and free thinkers is we use LOGIC and REASON. This will eventually be our Achilles Heel.

As an example look at "Intelligent Design" and "Fine Tuned Universe" theories.

Those amazing CONTORTIONIST HUCKSTERS are now using "Science" to bolster their shams. How amazing is that? They fought science nail and tooth for centuries and did their worst to exterminate any vestiges of it. Now that the genie is out of the bottle and cannot be tricked back into it, they are claiming themselves as masters of it and are trying to make it grant them wishes.

Any logical person would have NEVER EVER envisioned that the enemies of science would CONTORT and WARP it to cram it up the Malodorous Cavity of God.

Our problem is that we think too logically to be able to ANTICIPATE their next move.

It is like playing a game of chess with an opponent who is continuously changing the rules of the game and making up new ones to cause your last move to give him the advantage.

We are playing by the rules while they, like their mythological fairy, are playing outside time and space. There is no telling to what extent of vileness and illogic they can go.

Maybe - if, by "win" , you mean they will convince 94% of the population that they are correct, just before they all cease to exist. Oh well. At least they'll all cease to exist secure in the belief that they are not really ceasing to exist.

That's a hell of a way to "win". What is that game called?

Not our problem, theirs. They are the ones who are jacking up like rubber ducks, choosing to remain woefully ignorant in a time of unprecedented knowledge.

I've been told by believers that God put all that knowledge here at this particular time as a smoke screen to fool the atheists, whereas the beievers know better than to fool with it - not unlike the original apple from the Tree of Knowledge. It never occurred to these hypothesizers that, if the Master Of The Universe is a trickster, then no one can tell who He is tricking, because He is the Master Of All Tricksters. In fact, whoever they think He is tricking is certain to be the opposite of who He is really tricking. They never thought of that. They thought they could know who the Master Trickster is tricking. The fools.

As an example look at "Intelligent Design" and "Fine Tuned Universe" theories.

But "it" won't grant them any wishes. It is impossible to be inconsistent with reality. Doesn't matter how many fools they trick. Reality remains what it is. And sometimes it starts ticking.

Any logical person would have NEVER EVER envisioned that the enemies of science would CONTORT and WARP it to cram it up the Malodorous Cavity of God.

I disagree in principle. I think a logical person with a rudimentary knowledge of history would fully expect the enemies of science to try everything in their desperate attempts to halt the inexorable advance of science.

Frankly, 'they' can't truly 'win' unless they use knowledge, and they can't use knowledge unless they have it, and they can't have it unless they admit it, unadulterated by belief, into their little pea brains. Catch 22.

Catch 23: They can't win without science, but they could conceivably lose sufficiently spectacularly to bring us all down with them.

Our problem is that we think too logically to be able to ANTICIPATE their next move.

What is to anticipate? Believers want to go on believing and convince others to believe with them. To that end, they will seek POWAH and resort to all manner of self-deception. And it just so happens that what deceives oneself may often deceive other fools as well.

It is like playing a game of chess with an opponent who is continuously changing the rules of the game and making up new ones to cause your last move to give him the advantage.

Thereby causing them to wrongly believe they have won the fool-the-monkeys-chess match?

Only to discover that the real game wasn't fool-the-monkeys-chess at all. The real game was adapt-or-fail-and-maybe-fail-anyway-if-you're-unlucky, just like it's always been.

BZZZT! Game over. You have failed to adapt. Your light will now go out of the Multiverse. Thank you for playing. The next game will begin at Multiverse Coordinates {unknown, indeterminate, random, unspecified}

We are playing by the rules while they, like their mythological fairy, are playing outside time and space. There is no telling to what extent of vileness and illogic they can go.

No they're not. Maybe they think they are playing outside time and space, but in reality, they can't even comprehend a condition beyond time and space. They are strictly spacetime critters.

They had high levels of literacy when that was written?
Apparently, high enough to write crappy books. The level required for self-publication was never high. Given the self-published authors I know, the ability to write a check that doesn't bounce is all one needs.

When I was in High School my church, LDS, was pushing the meme that we were "Saturdays Warriors". The children that would live to see the end of times.

What you are remembering, actually, isn't anything officially LDS, but an independent, LDS-themed play, titled Saturday's Warrior, which ended up having a significant effect on the LDS culture in its time. If you're 50 now, then you were 12 when this play came out.
