Michelle Bachmann could be our next president.

You know, of course, that if she doesn't win the election (or the nomination) she is going to blame you. Can you live with yourself if that happens?

"yes"

(sorry for speaking for you MNBrant, but I felt that in this instance, we're all about on the same page here... :D)

If Bachmann were to be the nominee, I believe that the % of Jewish vote going to her would drop from the 22% that went for McCain to about 10%. And it ain't because she fumbled that pronunciation. It's because even conservative Jews (except for the ever-sniveling Lieberman) get itchy about her kind of religiosity.

In any case, here's an interesting table of % of Jewish vote in presidential elections since 1916: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/US-Israel/jewvote.html

The only time a Republican won the Jews was for Harding in 1920, when Eugene Debs, Socialist candidate, siphoned off a large chunk from the hapless Democrat.

I doubt that Bachmann lost much Jewish vote by this. Goyim have been mispronouncing "chutzpah" forever. However, she really has no excuse, having worked on a kibbutz for a time. What is most scary is her inability to learn from her experiences.

The Jews picked alot of losers according to your list, mostly Democrats. Have the Democrats really been this bad off during the 20th century? I remember reading a prenazi fascist book that said that the Jews historically have a prediliction for picking the losing side. It was written before 1939 but blamed the Jews problem with the Germans for siding with Napoleon during his war with Europe.

By the way, one of my ancestors got a title of nobility from the king of Sweden, for defending Russia from Napoleon. He was a blacksmith.

1916 to 2008
Jews pick winner 13 times
Jews pick loser 11 times

What the hell are you talking about? The point is, Jews vote for Democrats, win or lose. Always did, always will.

Thanks for adding that up for me. I stopped at something like 1948.

This is something that has always bugged me about my extended family. It sometimes seems that they vote for Democrats because they are Jews and Jews vote for Democrats, and then justify the vote afterwards. My grandmother practically worshiped Clinton 'because Clinton is for poor people and I am poor'. This would be sound logic if either of the two premises were actually true (the first is debatable and I disagree, but the second had not been true in my lifetime - I was about 30 when she said this).

And also the ADL scolded her by name for comparing contemporary politics to the Holocaust.

ETA: And she also lost what little of the African-American vote she might've had for saying essentially that black families were better off under slavery.

I think the bigger point is that she will learn that the demographics of the nation are not the same as the demographics of her district, and the base she caters to is not in the mainstream of the country.

There's some level of tradition there, but I think it's mostly because Jews tend toward liberalism. Top that with a long memory of what life could be like in Europe under religiously ordained government, and you've got a recipe for minuscule Jewish support for some of the possible Republican nominees in 2012.
