Michael Vick: persecuted by PETA?

Let's not forget that he denied it at first. He participated in dog fighting for years, and would have continued to do it for years if he hadn't gotten caught. He is scum.

While I understand that he paid for his crimes, I for one do not want him in the NFL. I do not want to be reminded of dog-fighting every time I tune in to my favorite entertainment sport. Let him make his living elsewhere, I wish him all the best, as long as he's not in a football uniform.

/end rant

Wow, just WOW. He signed to my favorite team of over 40 yrs (I'm from Philly). I'm stunned, literally stunned. The signing seemed to come out of the blue since they were one of the many teams that claimed to have no interest in him. I'm trashing my Eagles gear as we speak.

Who else is picking up a Vick jersey once they come into stock? It's actually a purchase that is a little bit in spite of PETA.

The Eagles Alt jerseys look real sharp. Lets just hope he's changed.

While my gut feeling is "Oooh, a nice blow against whacko animal rights loons like PETA" not everyone who is upset with Vick and his illegal dog operation is whacko.

But the temptation to buy one and wear it to the next local dog show is immense.

:D I'd do it but being a Panther fan I could never wear a Vick Jersey. See I hate him for perfectly logical reasons. ;)

I gre up for a good portion of my life in Southern NJ, which is also Eagles territory. I can't believe the Eagles team signed him on, since Eagles fans are friggin insane when it comes to being unkind to someone they don't like. I suppose the managers don't realize how much money they stand to lose by picking Vick.

It makes complete sense when you realize all Philly fans (of any sport in the city) are insane and dont' like ANYONE.

Why not hire someone like Vick? He's already going to be hated. :p

Nah, Philly fans are supremely loyal-- provided there's performance to back it up. However, they also tend to tire of jerks and they don't necessarily forgive past transgressions easily.

That is why I don't like how the focus on PETA, there are plenty of sane animal lovers who hate him.

PETA aside, I heard an interesting point brought up this morning on a sports talk show on ESPN Radio. The host read an e-mail from a listener saying that, essentially, Vick was getting far more than a 2nd chance. While we can debate ad nauseam about how serious his crime was or if he should be allowed to make millions of dollars again, it was pointed out that Vick has had multiple slip-ups during his NFL career. He was punished by the league for flipping fans off, he got caught with a water bottle with a marijuana compartment in the bottom at an airport, while awaiting trial for the dog-fighting charges he tested positive for marijuana and I think there are a few other incidents.

The only thing here is that, a) this was the most serious offense and, b) he went to jail for it. He has had more than his share of trouble as a pro but he's getting yet another chance. If he were not such a supremely talented athlete (not QB; he's a mediocre QB but a very good "athlete") he would never be asked back. That is the bottom line for the league and the Eagles: do they believe he is still a good enough player that he could contribute enough to mitigate the risk and blowback associated with letting him back in the league? The answer, obviously, is yes. While he may be on a short leash (no pun intended; okay, maybe a little), if the Eagles get to the playoffs because Vick makes a few important plays and perhaps even win a Super Bowl, all will be forgiven, especially if Vick follows through with his promises to work with the Humane Society and straighten his life out (which I think he could do but I won't hold my breath).

Supposedly there are many who are now selling their season tickets on Craigslist or ebay.

There may be a few fans who do sell but there is a wait-list of over 50K. There will be no shortage of season ticket holders and too many people are die-hards who would never put their anger about one player over their loyalty to the team. Again, there may be a few isolated cases but any large-scale exodus is impossible.

You don't know Philly very well, do you? ;)

I refuse to buy a Vick jersey if the NFL won't let me put "Ron Mexico" on the back.

Personally I find what Micheal Vick did deplorable. He's not welcome in my home or at my dinner table. I had a really cool Micheal Vick shirt that I have stopped wearing.

That being said he did the crime and has done the societally prescribed time. No further punitive actions outside my (or other's) personal realm of influence should be levied against him.

I wish him all the best in any areana that will accept him. The Scarlet Letter stigma mentality is plain unfair. If his trangressions were more grevious than the punishment metered out then that is OUR fault not his.

How should criminal records effect employment? Is it wrong for various employers to look at someones criminal record when vetting applicants?

There are so many careers that would be over with any felony, why should I care if pro football is one of them?

i love animals, but would never support what PETA do or stand for ..... like any cause they are the nutbag wing of it.

So this guy got jail for killing animals for pleasure - nice one. Wish they would lock up some of those brave toreadors too, who torture and kill bulls for entertainment ( .... oh sorry, its called culture? oh right ....)

It's LEGAL to have bullfighting, Spain and Mexico at least, it was ILLEGAL for Mr Vick to run a dog fighting ring.

Got it?
