Michael Moore's "Sicko"

Michael Moore is middle aged, and obese. I'll bet he needs lots of routine health care. I wonder where he gets it? Habana, or the Mayo Clinic?

Ah, yet another variation of the Michael Moore is a hypocrite attack. Michael Moore is wealthy, therefore he can afford the best medical care, therefore he cannot complain about health care in America, therefore health care in America is fine. It doesn’t quite track, and really just clouds the issue. No one is denying that medical care in the US is great if you are rich, but Michael Moore is talking about how the system treats people who are not rich.

The well-off are allowed to try and advocate for the less fortunate, you know.

...to heartbreaking (little girl dies because the emergency room she is sent to is not in the insurance company's care network)...
Sorry to pick out this small piece, but isn't that illegal? I thought emergency rooms were required by law to treat anybody who came through the door, regardless of their ability to pay.

Emergency rooms must assess the patient to determine if the patient has an "emergency medical condition" before obtaining financial information. Emergency rooms must at least stabilize the patient's emergency condition regardless of ability to pay.

If this doesn't happen, the hospital is in violation of Federal Law.

Linky

ETA: I wonder, does Moore mention the law in the film? What would he have us improve upon? It's a horrible tragedy, but what more can be done other than Federal Law and a well deserved lawsuit against the ER in question?

This article says that "Newly qualified doctors can expect to earn £20,741 in their first year", that would be about $41,000 US less that half the $100,000 that their counterparts in the US start at.
Darat's comparing GPs with GPs. You're not.

WHO are you trying to fool

Who Is The World Health Organization Trying To Fool?
by David Holcberg (June 27, 2000)

On June 21st, the World Health Organization published The World Health Report 2000. The most remarkable fact about the report does not concern its results, but rather the underlying premises that guide the organization and that led to such results.

The results of the WHO's "ranking of the world's health systems" show the US in 37th place, lagging far behind poverty stricken countries like Costa Rica, which came in 36th, Morocco in 29th, Cyprus in 24th, Colombia in 22nd, Greece in 14th, and Oman in 8th.

Of course, it is hard to take this ranking seriously. How many people can honestly believe that medical care in these countries is better than in the US? So what is going on?

The simple answer is that the WHO "created" three new "performance indicators" to measure the quality of health care systems. None of them gives much weight to people's health.

The movie is sadly lacking in specific, nitty-gritty details that those familiar with US healthcare are aware of. Instead, it tells the stories of people who have had to deal with the HMO industry, and then tells the stories of people who deal with healthcare in other countries. If you are looking for specific details and policy solutions, they are not really to be found in this film.

If, however, you are not familiar with the health care debate in this country except for anti-Hillarycare ads from the 1990s and know nothing about health care in other countries, this movie would be shocking. It was obviously made for a more general audience than for a handful of healthcare policy wonks.

Hopefully, people will watch the film, say WTF?, go to their libraries and try to learn more about healthcare in the US.

Number 1 Frog health care at it`s best...

France heat wave death toll set at 14,802

PARIS (AP) — The death toll in France from August's blistering heat wave has reached nearly 15,000, according to a government-commissioned report released Thursday, surpassing a prior tally by more than 3,000.

Scientists at INSERM, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, deduced the toll by determining that France had experienced 14,802 more deaths than expected for the month of August.

The toll exceeds the prior government count of 11,435, a figure that was based only on deaths in the first two weeks of the month.

The new estimate includes deaths from the second half of August, after the record-breaking temperatures of the first half of the month had abated.

The bulk of the victims — many of them elderly — died during the height of the heat wave, which brought suffocating temperatures of up to 104 degrees in a country where air conditioning is rare. Others apparently were greatly weakened during the peak temperatures but did not die until days later.

The new estimate comes a day after the French Parliament released a harshly worded report blaming the deaths on a complex health system, widespread failure among agencies and health services to coordinate efforts, and chronically insufficient care for the elderly

Oh, you can use statistics to prove anything that is even remotely true.

(H. Simpson)

Well, sheesh, are there any statistics that anyone would like to accept as relevant?

How about "number of stars on flag", would that be a good metric?

Well there you go...lets accept all statistics as relevant..without any critical scrutiny..that`s the lefty way...from Lenin to Hillary.

No, let's not, let's answer my question instead: which statistics would be relevant?

Lying about your opponents --- it's the right-wing nutjob way from Hitler to Coulter.

England's medical system was modeled after the Soviet Union which Lenin created. Hillary wants to model the U.S. after England. Lenin was a dictator. Hillary wants to be one.

Hitler condemned Germany's socialized medicine prior to seizing power, then expanded it to get more power. Hitler was a dictator. Coulter is a satirist. I'm sorry, what's Hitler's connection to Ann Coulter again?

Goodness! That's certainly a bit of unknown history you've suddenly discovered.
Hillary wants to model the U.S. after England.
Goodness! How twee!
Lenin was a dictator.
Stopped watch, right, twice, a day; even.
Hillary wants to be one.
I think you left out the baby-eating, which makes your statements incomplete and thus wrong.

Goodness! That's certainly another bit of unknown history you've suddenly discovered. How the hell did Hitler expand socialized medicine to get more power? This is fascinating.
