Michael Moore Strikes Back (But You Don't Listen)

It's not that which the soldiers -- and I -- have problems with, it's the way he paints soldiers that generalizes them as trigger happy teenagers from poor families who don't care nor know better.

- I'm sorry to have to interject here, but after four years of active duty service in the Army, that generalization is dead on.

- The military doesn't PAY ANYTHING. The reason I'm not in right now is because I make 6x what I did as an enlisted man, and I'm in the same field I was in back then.

- The military doesn't get wealthy, educated infantry. The military gets poor teens who they then train to be trigger-happy. That's the mission of the military: kill people.

- I'm really sorry if the soldiers somewhere overseas have been demoralized by Moore's film, but if they have, and unless a factual error can be pointed out on Moore's part to cause it, then you know where we place the blame. Who here has a problem with a soldier looking up at the sky in Iraq and thinking "hey, why AM I here anyway?" Bush can't answer that. So yeah, maybe morale has taken a hit. Wah. Life lesson #489: don't trust religious fanatics who run the government.

Who join to become rich?

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The mission is to kill the right people, a trigger-happy soldier killing at random is not helping.

It's not the point now is it? The point is Moore bring up that US soldiers are trigger happy killer who kill anything just because they are on the other end of the barrel. How the f*** does that relate to Bush?

Making a point that a group is, in the point-maker's opinion, too largely represented by a certain type, is not generalizing the whole group.

added a comma for easier reading

Can you rephrase that please?

Insinuating that the military intentionally appeals to, recruits or has too many "trigger happy teenagers from poor families" is not the same as "generaliz(ing) them as trigger happy teenagers from poor families who don't care nor know better."

The way Moore showed it in the film was a generalization.

Perhaps. I didn't take it that way. I'll revisit the issue next time I see it, probably on DVD.

This thread inspired a search.

Here is a criticism site that refernces and links to Moore's responses, as well as other sources. It is obviously critical of the movie, but apears to have moderated or withdrawn some original complaints when presented with new information. It also has relegated a nnumber of complaints to what the author concedes may be a difference of opinion or not clear-cut.

I have not finished reading the site as of yet and am not vouching for it; I have not read enough nor seen enough of other sources to comment, as of yet.
