You can film the police. The courts have upheld it over and over again.

You know, all those reporters with cameras everywhere might suppress the willingness of people to be seen rioting....

In fact, it occurred to me that a good way to stop a riot might be to fill the skies with helicopters with cameras and announce:

'OK, you must realize this riot has to end sometime. Right now we're taking pictures of those who've been naughty and nice and we'll be posting them to youtube....and then they'll be used as evidence in court.'

Then I found out they were shooting at the helicopters. :(

Do you mean Desiree Harris, the grandmother?
No. I'm trying to find a link to the Sharpton comparison of both witnesses but the woman was young, perhaps Piaget Crenshaw. But I need to find the Sharpton interview to be sure.

I'll say it again: police militarization has everything to do with the current situation.

That, and heads need to roll at the Ferguson PD.

According to those reports the police chief was shocked to hear that and those reporters were released without charges. I don't think in this instance the 'head' was the problem.

I don't believe the police chief was "shocked". If he was then he's an incompetent buffoon.

Thank you for that name, I was unaware of that witness. I found a piece looking for her account that included this quote from police:

DEAN SCHABNER ABC 8/10/14 said:
According to the police chief, the officer said he then got out of his vehicle and shot "at a subject."

"There were shell casings recovered. The shell casings are all matched to one weapon, that's the officer's weapon," Belmar said. "There were more than a few shell casings recovered. I cannot say at this time how many times the subject was struck."

"More than a few."

Yeah, that's pretty consistent with every other account and that police chief knows exactly how many casings were recovered. I don't think he wants to tell anyone for a very good reason.

From Puppycow's link:

Dylan Byers Politico 8/13/14 said:
According to the Washington Post, both reporters were taken to a police car where a member of the clergy was also being held, and then transported to a holding cell at the Ferguson police station. The Ferguson police chief was reportedly alerted to their arrests by Matt Pearce, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times. Pearce tweeted that when he informed the police chief of the reporters' arrest, the chief answered "Oh God" and said the riot police were from St. Louis County and likely "didn't know any better."

About a half an hour after arriving at the holding cell, Lowery and Reilly were released without any charges filed, the Post reports.

He may well be an incompetent buffoon, but I do believe he was displeased by the fact this occurred.

Belmar is the county police chief, not the Ferguson police chief, just for clarity.

I can't see why the county Chief would protect a bad Ferguson cop for very long.

Thank you for the information.

I can understand why they don't give his name, that doesn't necessarily mean he's being protected.

Wasn't the officer treated too? Just needed some tranquilizers? Or a Knife wound?

How would the story change if Brown had a knife, lost in the car? Unarmed when shot, but fleeing after assaulting an officer?

According to police the officer was injured but it was described as 'swelling' if I recall correctly, it's in one of the links posted to this thread. There was no knife reported being at the scene.

What I suspect occurred is the officer was in fact injured and then totally lost it in a way no one can possibly 'spin' their way out of. However we will see, I can wait until after the threat of imminent riots has passed to see if I guessed correctly from the limited information available.

None of that crap happened, casebro. Why are you just making stuff up?

It's reasonable to say we don't have all the facts. But if Brown had any weapons at all, or even if the officer believed he did, we would have heard that by now. Nothing like that was in the police chief's account of the officer's account.

"Oh God" is right. Don't think the WAPO is not going after whoever is responsible for the arrests with a whole bunch of false arrest lawsuits. And the attorneys for Ferguson won't get much sleep tonight because they know the WAPO can afford to hire the best legal brains in the country.
This little escapade is going to cost the taxpayers of Ferguson a lot of money.

I was really struck by the image at the bottom of this article: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way...ferguson-mo-2-reporters-caught-in-mass-arrest

I mean... in what fantasy scenario does a tripod-mounted sniper rifle atop a SWAT van come into play? We're not hunting Viet Cong in the jungle, here.

I am a pretty strong pro police guy usually, but that was idiotic.

I am beginning to think we have a bunch of small town cops who have a bunch of new gear and were not properly trained where and how to deploy it.

I feel like guessing it turns out to be that he opened his car door too hard, it bounced back off one of these guys, then hit the officer.

That's what Dorian Johnson said. It could be that Michael Brown pushed it back reflexively or on purpose--or at least the officer thought so. Ever hit your kneecap on the door getting out of a car? Boy that hurts! I've been known to tell the door just exactly what I think of it in the vernacular anglo-saxon. That's entirely irrational and it's my own damn fault of course, but momentarily I'm very angry at that damned door.

I mean protect, as in, not arrest him for killing Brown and/or help him to get away with killing Brown.

They would throw him to the dogs, imo.

Not necessarily. It may well be that he has some credits in his ledger as well. It's all well and good to pretend that someone who lost it (if that's what happened) must have been evil incarnate, but that's not how real human beings are in my opinion. If odds are he'll be spending the rest (or better part) of his life in prison it may well be his superiors aren't going to make it any worse in respect for what he once was.
