Mexico is in a state of anarchy

I remember one of our officers going on vacation in Mexico some years back; before the current drug-related violence. He said he felt remarkably safe due to the numbers of submachine-gun-armed police roaming the area in open trucks....
This would not have inspired confidence in me.

By all accounts, some areas have little problem, but others in border areas or along smuggling routes are in a serious state of crisis. The deeply-institutionalized corruption of the police forces is well known.
NPR's The World detailed the plight of a police lieutenant who was promoted to administrative rank. He was promptly approached by representatives of one of the cartels who brought along a briefcase full of cash and a cell phone. "Now," they said, "you work for us."
The guy tried to decline his promotion, but the department would not reinstate him to lower rank. He ended up seeking asylum in the US.....

There may be places in mexico where its relatively safe but with so many places to visit in the USA I'd just rather decline.

Theres several reasons not to visit mexico. The complete total and utter lack of law and order is the best reason of all.

Mexico could have been one of the best places to be on the face of the earth but non existent and or corrupt police forces will cause me to go elsewhere for a vacation.

"Every cop in town quits after Mexico attack", not "Every cop in Mexico quits after Mexico attack".

There are plenty of people in my neck of the woods who wouldn't eat a steak, drive a car, or buy clothes produced by a large corporation- but think nothing of smoking imported pot or even snorting drugs up their noses. This problem won't go away as long as people with money in the US are willing to do business with these criminals, whatever the human toll.

As long as we keep it illegal, then necessarily one will support criminals.

Legalize drugs and the criminals STARVE.

Time to legalize and end prohibition. Didnt work before and it sure as hell aint working now.

Mexico particularly Baja was a great destination for me for years but now I wont go there. I know guys that had homes and businesses down there that left for the same reasons. The cartels control everything and the Mexican federal goverment is powerless to even slow them down.

Prohibiting alcohol caused a surge in organized crime that got so bad we ended the prohibition. The prohibition of drugs is different because drugs are strange and exotic and they've been prohibited for a lot longer than alcohol was in the early 20th century. Yes,... this makes perfect sense. Some blame the users, some blame those who prohibit it in the first place. I think once all the old fashioned mind sets die off, the problem will solve itself. Should I be glad to not be part of that old fashioned mind set? Would those of the old fashioned mind set even realize that they are? All the people who don't try hard in high school are punks, and I've got anecdotal evidence that the world is scary and full of drug crazed loons. It's time for a stiff drink and a fat cigar.

Perhaps it's time for the US to bring Freedom to Mexico...

Why not. We "freed" half of Mexico back in the mid 1800's. Might as well finish the job.

Hey! That will solve the Illegal alien problem. Annex Mexico, every Mexican becomes a U.S. citizen, Illegal alien problem solved.

The problem is not that easy to solve. Mexico has a huge corruption problem. It's almost a tradition among the uber rich in Mexico.
You would have to replace all the political leaders with people outside of the culture (i.e. Americans, And you how corruption proof we are. roll them eyes buddy)

The other half of the problem is our drug users. Where do you think the drug lords are getting all that money from? Either legalize drugs and trade one problem for another (Since "moderation" is word we don't seem to know the meaning of) or stop buying Mexican weed and go Canadian. It's better quality and besides the Yakuza have been a little neglected lately.

Or better yet, STOP DOING NARCOTICS ALTOGETHER!. It's healthier for you and you don't have worry about gaining wieght, getting hooked, having a crack induced heart attack or losing your job.

Ha! Like that's going to happen anytime soon.

So then what's the solution boyos?

But then we trade one problem for another.

A new utopia isn't going to develope once drugs are legalized. There will be an increase in health related problems and addictions, domestic violence, DWIs, DWI related deaths and injuries, And twinkie shortages. Imagine the riots!

And we all know how all that new revenue form repeal of prohibition went a long way to deal with the social and health issues related to alcohol abuse.

So which is the less of two evils? And you know the problem of chosing between two evils is.

Legalize drugs and the criminals STARVE.

Would that it were so.

There's a lot of merit to the idea that legalizing drugs will undercut a rather major revenue stream for criminals. But that won't starve them, that will push them into other businesses. That might be a net benefit, maybe a big one, but they'll still be there. After all, where would they go? Why would they just start working legitimately? They wouldn't, and they won't. Ending alcohol prohibition did a lot to reduce the power of the mob, but it's still around. Ending drug prohibition may reduce the power of the cartels, but they won't go away either.

Since I live on Vancouver Island, I can assure you that buying Canadian pot is far better for my area's economy you than the Mexican stuff.
