Metatheory and the NIST report

no, not true

High velocity shock is required to pulverize.

Velocity shock = 2 x height of the fall/deflection

In the cases of both towers the deflection was very high and essentially equaled the fall providing no more than a 2G hit.
My roommate fist was high velocity shock as he pulverize the wall board and ceiling tiles. High velocity fists. LOL, you are funny.

Have you corrected the too numerous to mention errors, like the 600 mph impact, in your paper at the Journal of 9/11 truth?

This if funny, what now are you trying to prove with your fists of high velocity shock?

Jay - you've been asked to post some examples of evidence of your claim that temperatures greater than can be reached in office fires occurred in WTC.
So far, you're 0/2.

Do you have any more?

Bump for jay.

Of course, you might have given up on that claim. Please let us know.

You realize that a great deal of that dust cloud was gypsum wallboard, ceiling tile, and other man made vitreous fiber right?

A child can pulverize that stuff with a toy hammer.

And I suppose you have seen the latest from Bazant, Le, Benson, and Greening? In order to achieve the same degree of concrete pulverization with explosives, the charges would need to be wired into small holes drilled into the concrete floor slabs on every single floor. Tell me why no one noticed the ripped up carpet, or the crews working, or the moved cubicles while this massive project was underway.

No argument that a lot of the dust cloud was gypsum wallboard. However, a great deal of it was also concrete. Otherwise we would have seen many stacked up floors after the collapse.

I do not believe that charges were placed under the carpet into holes drilled in the concrete. However they could have easily been installed on the floor trusses beneath the floor. You should realize that these areas would be hidden from view as there was a distance of four feet from the drop celing to the floor above it, since the floor trusses were four feet deep. Don't forget a new security system was installed by Securacom (Marvin Bush George Bush's brother and Wirt Walker George Bush's cousin were on its board) and that could have easily been used as cover to install explosives. The elevator shafts were not visible either and could have been used to install explosives on the core columns.

The explosive installation project would have been done over a long period of time and would not need to be massive. Bush's brother and cousin had security at the towers for years.

So is it just about possible that the dust cloud seen early in the collapse was gypsum wallboard, and that the concrete pulverisation took place later in the collapse when there was a lot more kinetic energy available? Or is 250 kilotons of silent flash-free explosive drilled into the floors when nobody was looking more plausible?

Explosives installed on the floor trusses wouldn't have caused the pulverisation, only surface spallation. They would have to have been placed into holes drilled into the concrete from below. While that would have been possible without being seen, the noise would have been very loud. Has anybody reported continuous loud drilling going on under their feet for months leading up to 9/11?

Incidentally, Securacom never installed a new security system, Marvin Bush left Securacom/Stratesec in 2000, and Wirt Walker isn't George Bush's cousin. Check your facts please.

The explosive installation project would have been done over a long period of time and would not need to be massive. Bush's brother and cousin had security at the towers for years.

Securacom signed the contract in 1996 and were released from it in 1998 IIRC because they couldn't supply the systems required. So in fact Bush's brother and non-cousin never "had security at the towers".

You know, if you stop and think about it, how much of the wallboard had already been pulverized from the impact? Not to mention ash from combustion of the office materials. There must have been piles of it already on the floors, and when the collapse started, poof, instant dust cloud. Doesn't have to be from the collapse initially at all, IMO. Not that that carries any weight!

JimBenArm:

No, I think this is a good point. Also consider that on the fire-affected floors the concrete was being nicely roasted. Once concrete gets above 100 deg C the free water it contains, (typically several % by weight), is converted to steam which often causes explosive spalling. At temperatures ~ 450 deg C, the calcium hydroxide in the cement starts to decompose causing the concrete to loose strength and "powderize". This degraded concrete would pulverize very easily. Fires in tunnels are a nightmare because the concrete ceilings and walls lining the tunnel often collapse....

Interesting point. Would this be more or less pronounced in lightweight concrete of the type that was used for the WTC floors?

Ummmm .... what would be the purpose?

Such explosives wouldn't help bring down the Towers, and would represent a monstrous amount of futile work which would lead to a greatly increased chance of detection.

Nah. It's a load of old tosh.

Question

Can any experts or non-experts explain to me why NIST would leave out the gaping hole in the North Tower when determining the amount of oxygen available for burning?
Thanks for any help in understanding this issue!:)

Because this would lead them to conclusions that didn't fit into the framework of the Cabal's story.[/sarcasm]

I assume you mean NCSTAR 1-5? Page 79 simply contains the graphs of accuracy between the actual temperature and the FDS predicted temperature. The purpose of these tests is illustrated on page 75:

NCSTAR 1-5 Page 75 said:
Following the single workstation fire experiments and the accordant improvements in FDS, a series of large-scale experiments was conducted in the NIST Large Fire Laboratory between November 4 and December 10, 2003 (NIST NCSTAR 1-5E). The six experiments were designed to assess the accuracy with which FDS predicted the fire spread, heat release rate, and thermal environment in a large compartment in which multiple workstations were burning in a configuration characteristic of that found in the WTC buildings.
The tests were not intended to be identical to the conditions in any one section of the tower, more a validation or calibration of the FDS when it comes to temperature prediction given known conditions. This model was later used to predict temperatures reached including the gaping holes in the building.

You are not using your engineer hat here. lol

The stuff of Pulitzer Prizes, or nut case rant. You are a sad, sad engineer who has so many errors in facts, logic, and you even published them.

This post had me laughing all morning.

Sorry, I posted the wrong citation.

NCSTAR 1-5A_chap_1-8 page 79

There is nothing I can see related to oxygen flow modelling on either page 79 of the document or of the PDF. Are you sure you have the correct citation? The previous one seemed more likely to be correct?

Yeah, a real kneeslapper. Do you have anything specific to say about that description of how explosives could be placed in the bldg and Marvin Bush's connections to the WTC, or are you going to stick with namecalling?

Bump for jay.

Of course, you might have given up on that claim. Please let us know.

NCSTAR 1-3C said:
The wasting of the web plates most likely resulted from a high temperature, corrosion process that was exacerbated by the presence of sulfur. While not enough evidence was available to indicate whether corrosion occurred through gaseous, liquid , or solid attack (in addition to varied conditions possible in the rubble pile and lack of information associated with the recovery of the column at the WTC site), it was most likely that the degradation process was most likely a complex combination of these three....

Assuming that the original microstructure in this area was similar to that found in Fig. 6-22a, the re-distribution of pearlite and larger ferrite grain size would imply significant changes in the microstructure that could have only been achieved through austenitizing of the steel. Concomitantly, this would suggest that temperatures were much higher in this portion of the plate than found at the base of the column. With the average weight percent carbon in the material at 0.16, the plate temperature would have to exceed 830C (above the upper critical temperature [A3]) to enter the fully austenitic region. In this region, both the original ferrite and pearlite have completely transformed. 230, 231

To which, you responded:

They conclude that the corrosion occurred in the debris pile, and explain why (p229 and elsewhere)

This is an interesting attempt to dismiss the significance of these temperatures for a few reasons:

1. FEMA is very clear on the issue that there is a lack of evidence to demonstratively place the event pre or post collapse. NIST again shows us how to insert certainty without evidence--despite the fact FACT that there is no clear source for the sulfur--only speculation. For those who think the answer lies in sheetrock, please explain why NIST never came up with such an obvious answer.

2. Regardless of the location of these temperatures, an energy source would still need to be accounted for. Steel temps of 830C are far above what we should expect from "oxygen starved" fires in the debris pile. If in fact, they occurred there, what energy source could possibly have produced them? Remember, gas temp DOES NOT equal material temp. Steel is an excellent conductor of heat. The air around the steel in question would have to reach temperatures in excess of the steel temperature in proportion to the steel mass and conductive rate. The NIST theory of combustible office products does not deal well with this evidence.

3. Some of the steel in question clearly indicates a eutectic reaction took place. Yes, that lowers the melting point of steel, but it does not help explain what the source of a eutectic reaction was--if you have evidence that they are naturally occurring phenomena in office fires, please don't hide your results. Apollo 20 says he can replicate this phenomenon with ordinary construction materials. Many would like to see this.

4. As has been pointed out repeatedly, the ferrous microspheres found by the USGS have a very small likelihood of occurring through evaporation of blood (ridiculous!) and a much higher probability of occurring as a by-product of some kind of fast-heating reaction of steel. Again the absolute crap explanations of these occurring as a result of evaporating blood (or whatever process of blood reduction is stipulated) would be fascinating indeed if they could be reproduced. But instead of the much more probable, yet incompatible theory that they were produced from a high-heat attack of steel is pushed aside to maintain an extremely low-probability event. That's not pseudo-scientific at all.

As many are happy to point out when the answer is in front of you, you need to read the report. Specifically, read 1-3C. If you still don't understand what they've found there, I'm sure you'll let me know.

I pointed it out earlier, but predictably, a flurry of tangential posts flooded the board.

As said before:

What must happen first is to demonstrate that the current, official conspiracy theory is unable to answer the question of how the WTC buildings fell. Then and only then is a better theory necessary.

If the official conspiracy theory is a complete, falsifiable theory that explains all the evidence better than any other theory, then there is no need to appeal to alternate theories.

If the official version is deficient, then we look for an answer that is less deficient.

As I've said from the OP, these are not unrealistic conditions for a theory to meet. This is not a special case where logic and reason do not apply.

If you are unwilling to put the NIST explanation through the metatheoretical ringer, then you are maintaining an article of faith. Isn't part of the purpose of JREF to expose belief systems that pose as scientific theories?

I find it odd that on a forum dedicated to cutting through the bachelor of science and getting to the truth of matters, most participants seem either to have the attention span of a goldfish or they would very much like for this debate to go away. It's as though people who support the party line are as protective of their own worthless theories as the certifiable crazies who argue creationism far beyond the limits of rationality.

I just wanted to be the first to link to 911myths.com's debunking of the Marvin Bush nonsense:

http://911myths.com/html/stratesec.html

Mark and Stacey Loizeaux of Controlled Demolition, Inc. tell me that wiring the Twin Towers without being noticed would have been a "logistical impossibility." But, of course, they must part of the Impossibly Vast Conspiracy.

Is there any thoroughly discredited snake oil you don't swallow uncritically?
