Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays

Holiday isn't generic enough. (Holy day?)

How about this:

"Have a nice day."

Oh, wait... its been done.

I like Merry Christmas, because it's the only time you get to use Merry in a greeting. We already use Happy way too often. Happy Birthday, Happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy New year. If you ask me, "Happy Holidays" is a subversive plot by the Happy Guild to have a monopoly on Holiday Greetings.

If you ask me, We should fight back to the Merriest extent we can! No more Happy New Year, It's Merry New Year!
No more Happy Birthday, it's Merry Birthday!
and we keep Merry Christmas, because we got all the songs already.

In the UK if you think that in 2009 saying "Merry Christmas" has anything to do with a Christian holy festival of a similar name then you are in a minority.

Much like "God bless you", when someone sneezes.

Merry Christmas doesn't bother me. What I find annoying are the X-tains that claim that any saying besides Merry Christmas is trying to subvert the holiday. Like the gross commercialism hasn't already?

If the whiny people on that website were so gunning to buy religious based stuff why not go to a religious store or website. There are enough of them out there.

Bah humbug.

Yeah, that always amused me.

People get bent out of shape when, during the celebration of their supposed role-model who promoted the rejection of a material focus, that role-model isn't being recognized properly during the purchase of Tickle-Me-Elmo and Billy-Bass-the-Singing-Trout.

Happy holydays sound like silly pc talk to me.

What is wrong with "god jul og godt nytår" ?:)

If somebody can be offended by a merry Christmas they need to be offended more often.

The counterpoint is, of course, if someone can be offended by a Happy Holidays, they need to be offended more often.

Its a matter of supreme indifference to Me. When I wish someone Merry christmas, the last thing on my mind is the nativity of Jesus.

There is nothing wrong with observing rituals and they may be necessary but you dont have to believe in the story one way or the other. I am usually too concerned about if I am going to get another pair of frigging socks than the genesis of some desert God.

For me: MERRY CRHISTMAS!!!!

For my wife: Happy Holidays.

I'm a secular Christian. I love to make merry. I like feeling gay. Sadly Merry and Gay have a restraining order against me. Oh well, I can still get drunk and put a lamp shade over my head (in some states). Screw 'em if they can't take a joke.

You just knew I was going to ask you Rand. What is a secular Christian? I googled it and if offered more questions than it answers.

:)

One who follows the customs and traditions (cultural aspects) of Christianity but does not believe in god. One could even follow the religious prescriptions though that is not typical. Secular Jews, AIU, are more likely to follow religious prescriptions (keep Kosher as well as others). Secular Christians tend to just enjoy the perks. I have two close friends who are atheist and strictly observe the prescriptiosn of Passover and other religious holy days but they don't strictly keep Kosher during the non-Holy days.

BTW: Secular Christian is AKA Cultural Christian.

Firm advocate of Merry Christmas here. Happy Holidays is so generic and wishy washy. Just wish people wouldn't try to ruin it with their petty religious nonsense.

I was living in North London one year when Diwali came around, and Diwaliist neighbours and shopkeepers took to wishing anybody on two legs 'Happy Diwali'. We Christians were having none of that ... 'don't you oppress me with your insensitive foisting of your religious values on me, no Sir!' and so on.

Well actually we didn't. We went along to the displays and then had a curry and went down the pub. Who cares.

You got it. A good party is a good party and deserves to be celebrated.

Jesus: Love your enemies. Pray for those who spite you. Don't be angry if someone slaps you.
Bob: Jesus?
Jesus: Yes Bob?
Bob: Happy Holidays.
Jesus: #@%$ YOU! Prick.
