I just saw this website (Stand for Christmas) and needed to come here for some sanity.

Am I the only one who wants to hear "Happy holidays" and not be constantly reminded of religious beliefs that I don't hold?

I grew up on Santa. The fat man doesn't care if you call it 'Christmas' or 'Holidays'.

I don't care either way which is said to me. Hearing "Christmas music" in retail stores, on the other hand, can go the way of the dinosaurs.

I don't care, happy holidays, happy hannukah, happy new year, merry christmas, krazy kwanza, silly solstice, satisfactory saturnalia, it's all good.

That sort of thing cracks me up. America was supposedly founded on the idea of religious freedom, but so many dumbasses interpret that as the freedom to be Christian. Who cares if someone says "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays"? They're wishing you happiness, isn't that enough?

I'm a happy holidays guy, its easier to just remember one phrase for the whole season.

Our traditional holiday greeting roughly translates to "Have a Good Yule". I don't mind Merry Christmas one iota, but I am equally happy being wished Happy Holidays or whichever name the person wants to give the season.

If they hand out Glögg, they can wish me a Laporascopic Easter if they like.

Given that I agree with the common consensus it's starting to look like your answer is; yes, you almost are.

Oh, Merry Christmas to you.

:D

I was living in North London one year when Diwali came around, and Diwaliist neighbours and shopkeepers took to wishing anybody on two legs 'Happy Diwali'. We Christians were having none of that ... 'don't you oppress me with your insensitive foisting of your religious values on me, no Sir!' and so on.
Well actually we didn't. We went along to the displays and then had a curry and went down the pub. Who cares.

Funny, that sounds exactly like the Danish "Ha en god jul". Must be back from them old Vikings and their "Drinking Yule" which was what started this midwinter celebration. :D

Apparently not. The missus (Catholic) and I got into a brief heated discussion this weekend. She came back from mass on Sunday and she was telling me that Father Bob, in his Homily, was lamenting how "they" are trying to outlaw Christmas. I called BS on it right away, but I guess I threw her on the defensive. Her response was "Why can't our township put up a Nativity scene?" and why can't Target employees say "Merry Christmas". I tried to explanin the difference between actions the government take which might run afoul of the law, versus company polcies made by private business. But it was to no avail and she hasn't talked to me since.

bunch of whining babies on that site. (I have been saying that phrase a lot lately, tis the season.)
"Mom and I went Christmas shopping at Macy's, Milford, CT. No one said Merry Christmas, but, we wished them Merry Christmas. There were no christmas decorations and no christmas cheer. Christmas was no big deal , but, they kept wanted us to sign up for some deal they had going on for $25. Selection was terrible. Couldn't get what we wanted. I asked mom "why do you shop here?" Merry Christmas and God bless."

Wow, it is only Dec. 2nd, Christmas Nazi.

"Called customer service about nnot using the word"Christmas". The customer service rep. said "You mean this is the only reason why you will not shop in our store?",also said they will not change!"

Love it.

i know what you mean, CJW. I wanted to put "Happy Holidays" on our Christmas card (holiday card?) because, by my way of thinking, it applies to all the holidays and "Merry Christams" applies just to the one day, but my church-going wife says "No way. It's a Christmas and we put Christmas on the card." So I put Christmas on the card. It's not worth fighting over.

I don't believe in Christ so I hate "Merry Christmas".
I don't believe in holiness so I hate "Happy Holidays".
And you know what else? I don't believe in Odin. **** Wednesday.

If someone tells you to have "happy holidays" then you know they're either American or have spent far too much time among Americans. If you're British (I half am) and hear yourself say it you're mortified when you see what you did there.

I typically say "Happy Holidays", not out of political correctness but more in that it's the holidays (ie. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years). Closer to Xmas, when people start taking leave from work I'll say "Merry Christmas"....

As a side note...I use to work with someone that was/is Jewish. One day I asked him if he ever got offended by someone saying "Merry Christmas" to him. He asked "do you get offended when I say 'Happy Hanukkah' to you?" I answered "No, why would I? I'm not Jewish but I know you are...I tend to be flattered." "Exactly" was his reply.

The wife and I had a terrible blow-out argument when I was so terribly improper as to actually say the word "Xmas" to her. Why anybody gets so upset over any of this stuff confounds me, but now I know not to say "Xmas" around her anymore.

I'm an atheist activist and I say Merry Christmas. Christmas has nothing to do with religion to me (though I recognize it does for many people). I don't really care. Christmas is what you make it.

The solution is easy, blame the american people for not keeping to this nations puritan roots and legalizing christmas.

If they had just kept christmass illegal none of this would be an issue.
