Just wanting to draw your attention to the following. Ottawa Brights/humanists meetups are happening monthly and you would be most welcome to sign up / attend. I've been going along for a few months now and enjoying it.

The group names are not hard definitions - I personally dislike being called humanist or atheist, even if the description fits, and as for Brights... - well anyway, its a big tent, definitions be damned. I think of it as like the JREF, but in a pub or a coffee shop. Very relaxed affairs.

Ottawa Brights meet-up: Science, society and beverages
Nov 21st:
Climate change: science and politics at odds.

And on the side, there’s also the

atheist/humanist book club:
Dec 7th:
Discussing the God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins.

Hope to see some of you there. :)

This sounds like something I'd like, but unfortunately I'm booked pretty much every Tuesday and Thurday evening. But by all means, please keep me posted on events that might take place on other nights.

cool, my brother that was at the last TAM lives in the Ottawa area.

Unless you ARE my brother!

Pretty certain it isn't me either... I've yet to get to a TAM.

The days of the week for the meetings can vary sometimes - I'll just make a point of updating this thread for new events.

There's been a name change and a venue change - Brights and Science is considered a more appropriate description, and the meetup has moved to the Royal Oak, on account of the large numbers of people (hopefully) showing up. If anybody is interested in going along, the topic tomorrow is climate change.

What: Brights and Science meet-up: Climate Change and Ottawa

When: Tuesday, November 21 at 7:30PM

Where: Royal Oak
1217 Wellington St (just east of Holland Ottawa
Ottawa ON K1Y 2Z8

Event Description:
Here we go tweaking the meet-up! Brights and science meet-up is
a time for people to discuss interesting topics and share
conversation. Each month we get together to discuss interesting
science stories for the month; what is new and promising and
what is likely bogus. We also try to focus on a topic for the
meeting.

November's meeting: Climate change appears to put science and
politics at odds. What is the balance? What is the impact to
Ottawa? We are not going to be flooded by rising oceans of
course, but are we going to see more severe weather? Droughts?
Tornadoes, Ice Storms or will we never have the canal freeze
over again?

Cool! I haven't read the book yet, but I'll try to make it to that event.

Thanks!
I'll try to make it. Looks like a short walk from Tunney's Pasture station, no?

Hey, the new avatar looks great.

Hey, the new avatar looks great.

Exactly right, Tunney's Pasture is the closest stop.

New avatar is an IFS fractal, homemade by me, using Apophysis. Thanks for the compliment!

Royal Oak, 7pm - 7.30pm tonight. For anybody who is coming: look out for the guy in the yellow shirt, or the guy in the dark red sweatshirt. (That will be me).

I'll be there. The meetup link reads 7:30, but 7:00 is just as good. Look for the goateed redhead with glasses and grey sweater. My friend Jim, who is also attending the TAM, might possibly make it as well.

16 people attended. Great conversation.

Topic for next time: good and evil. Will update with more details later.

I was one of those in attendance and must concur that it was very interesting. Hope to see everyone again in January.

I agree. Interesting people and thought-provoking conversation. The nachos were good too :). I'll try to make it to the next one as well. If possible, avoid scheduling it between the 17th and 23rd of January :D.

You're in luck, Lee: provisionally, the next meetup is scheduled for Thursday 11th Jan 2006. Topic is 'persecution'.

Details to come...

If they could make something on a Wednesday some time, I could make that night. Perhaps you could ask about it for me?
