I was going to post this as a blog entry on my site, but now that we're a few days from TAM4, I think it's appropriate to post it here. Maybe I'll edit it a bit and blog it anyway. Still... if you're going to TAM 4, please read it.

So I carry this little card in my wallet. It's the same size as a business card. It's plastic, blank on one side. The other side, the business end, so to speak, has little pictures of spirals all over it, in red and green and blue. The surface is ridged with about a hundred very small, well, ridges, made of translucent plastic, so you can see the spirals through them.

If you hold the card upright (portrait mode for you printer-savvy readers) and rotate it around the long axis, the spirals appear to spin! It's quite a cool illusion. Even better, some spin clockwise and others counterclockwise! Everyone who sees it is fascinated by it. It's almost hypnotizing.

I picked it up in 1985 at a college bookstore. I wish I'd bought a hundred of them. They'd make great gifts. Hey, they'd make great business cards. Damn! Too late, I only bought one.

I really wish I had bought at least two. I couldn't figure out how the thing works! It's amazing. If I'd had another one, I could carefully peel off the ridges and see how it works. I knew it involved a Fresnel lens of some kind, but I couldn't see how that was done.

Over the years I showed it to a lot of people. Astronomers, physicists, even opticians. I showed it to the guy who was the inventor of the Hubble Space Telescope camera I worked on. This guy's no slouch, duh, he built a frigging camera on board Hubble, but even he was stumped by it.

So it's sitting in my wallet for years. Then, back in 2003, I got invited to TAM. I was thrilled! During the meeting, I went outside for the buffet breakfast and plopped myself down next to one James "The Amazing" Randi, and he's talking about a trick he did once. It jogged my memory, and I said to him, "Hey, what do you make of this?" and I hand him my spiral Fresnel business card thingy.

He looks at it, and without even hesitating, he says, "Ah yes, a visaview," and then he hands it back to me.

I suspect you could probably hear those words echoing around in my mouth, hanging open like a cave as it was. I'd had that card for nearly 20 years, and no one knew what the hell it was. I'd done web searches, even! And Randi knew what it was right away.

"I don't suppose you know how it's done, do you?" I asked.

And then (he is Amazing, after all) Randi launched into a history of the technique, about how it was discovered by accident when Wrigley was filming a chewing gum commercial decades ago. The ridges act like lenses, yes, but they also let light through only from a certain direction. There are several pictures underneath the lens part, split into rows and interlaced. When you look at one angle, one of the pictures gets lensed toward your eye. Change that angle by rotating the card, and you suddenly see a different picture. That's how the spirals rotated; there were several images of them, sort of like an animated cartoon is just a bunch of drawings seen in a sequence.

I was probably slack-jawed during the whole speech he gave. 20 years I'd had that thing. I should have eaten breakfast with Randi a long time back.

In another thread on this board, it was mentioned that Randi and other "big names" at TAM II weren't very accessible (though it was also said things were better at TAMIII). I think a lot of people are too star-struck, or just frightened, to go up to Randi.

Folks, do yourselves a HUGE favor. Talk to the guy. I have never walked away from a discussion with him without having laughed myself silly at some story he's told, and he has a lot of stories. He's all gruff and curmudgeonly on the outside, but on the inside he's just like the rest of us: gloppy, red, and full of disgusting organs and things. But he also is a pretty nifty fella, and you should get to know him better.

You mean I won't get escorted away by security, like usually happens?

Come to think of it though, I guess that is only when I approach famous women.

I went to TAM3 and they all seemed pretty open to me. Shermer and Randi in particular.

Oh yea, and I talked with BA for a while at the forum party.

Great story.
I intend to pester as many of you TAMites as possible.

I was too scared to talk to Mr.Randi at the first TAM. I only knew him from his tv appearances. He's kind of scarey talking to supposed psychics!

when I finaly got up enough guts to talk to the guy and ask for a photograph to be taken with him, I found out he is wicked funny - and a little bit of a flirt!

When Mr.Randi came to Boston to speak my husband drove him to his talk (we only got a little bit lost). After spending just a short amount of time with him my husband whispered to me, "This man is sharp! "

Now, just a word. This is the mommy in me coming out. If Mr.Randi is on his way to an interview, or rushing here and there (TAM is busy) he may not have time to talk. He isn't being rude, but he has a LOT to do. And please, let the man rest if he looks like he needs it!

Just use common sense.

And this is why I always tell people volunteer!!!

I'll be packing packets all day Wed instead of enjoying the delights of Vegas. TAM 2 is the first time I did this and while it was crazy, I got to have the pleasure of working with the JREF crew. Mr.Randi performed 2 magic tricks for me when I was least expecting it! (He doesn't warn you, things just disappear!!! Right before your eyes!) I always push people to volunteer!

If the room is set up in the same way as last year a tip for anyone wanting to get to meet most of the speakers, sit in the row behind the tables reserved for the speakers. Tim and I sat there last year and we got to meet nearly all the speakers and even got a bit of "insider" gossip!

Last TAM, on Thursday morning, Shanek and I (Shane was my roommate for TAM2 and TAM3, for those who didn´t know) hung out in the lobby of the Stardust, just off the registration counter, to see if we met any attendees we knew from the year before.

The first one we see is Randi himself. "Good morning", we say, me with an accent, Shane without one. We exchanged a few pleasant words, I don´t remember which exactly, then Randi asked: "Would you like to join us for breakfast?".

So, a few minutes later, two lowly forum members and TAM attendees were having breakfast with Randi, Richard Dawkins (he showed up only briefly IIRC) and the Bad Astronomer. And, without asking, Randi paid our tab, too.

That is how approachable Randi is. Nothing like this ever happened to me before.

I have to honestly say, Mr.Randi is just a dear. He isn't just intelligent, he is a good, funny (very funny), personable, and caring person.

There is a reason he got into this skeptic business. He didn't have to.

He did it simply because, he cares.

And the best part is that this man has the ability to inspire others. That is a rare gift. Meeting him will count as one of the most memorable experiences of your life. I'm not kidding.

OH and get a photo taken with him!

So true! I've only ever been to TAM #1 in Lauderdale...and that was pretty great! I found Mr. Randi to be very approachable and friendly...I was the one who was kind of hard to talk to...being slack-jawed and so in awe I could barely speak that is!

So Kitty...is it possible to get my 13 year old daughter a gig as a volunteer? She's tagging along to Vegas with us but doesn't have a ticket to TAM. All in all she's just there to enjoy the pool unless I can talk JREF into letting her do some work! ;)

I can´t speak as an official (because I am not an official), but I guess no-one will be upset if she shows up during registration time (Thursday 1 PM to 5 PM) to mingle with people - or at the forum party and chocolate challenge.

Cool

Looking forward to the chocolate! :)

yeah check out the unofficial forum activities!

I"m not in charge of volunteers, you'd need to check with Scott.

What a wonderful anecdote, BA. As I've posted ad nauseum on this forum, I'll be one of the people that Paul mentioned, looking for you to listen to wonderful stories about space, but I'm privileged enough to be sharing a table with Mr. Randi at the celebrity dinner, just 72.25 hours from now, and I'm quite certain that it will be a, if not the, highlight from this trip.

Thanks for this post.

My brother Paul sent me my first Mr.RAndi book.

It changed my life. It changed the life of my children and husband.

Now, in just a short while I hope to introduce my brother to Mr.RAndi.

I can't tell you what that is going to mean to me.

I first met Randi back in 1975, as a college student. I saw a poster at Millersville State University (Penn State) that he was doing a performance. I didn't know him outside of seeing him on Johnny Carson.

I attended the lecture/show (and actually was asked to come to the stage and had my hands tied.....uh untied....hmm tied....untied, by Randi). The whole lecture was eye opening. He invited any and all to come to a classroom after the show, and I went, sitting up close. He showed how to bend keys, spoons, and other tricks. I was a hit when I replicated what he did, as an amateur magician for family and friends. His lecture was impressive and I became more of a critical thinker that day.

About 25 years later, I was walking down a street in Ft. Lauderdale, and saw a large wooden sign saying, "James Randi Education Foundation". Instead of knocking, I called information assistance, found out it was the same Randi, called, and was invited over. In the last 5 years I've become much more of a critical thinker and became more active in the fight against those who embrace the paranormal. I've had the opportunity to volunteer some time at the JREF, have joined other skeptic organizations, and became more well read in the field.
