Media player locking up?

On my brother's PC, when he tries to play .avi files in windows media player (probably other files as well, but I haven't tested), it shows "connecting..." and locks up the computer. If I close it through task manager (which loads very slowly), it doesn't solve the problem unless I end the actual process.

Apparently, there is a similar effect when opeing DVD's in PowerDVD, although I haven't tested that myself.

He recently upgraded his grpahics card to a Geforce 6200, so that's likely to be the cause, but I tried updating the drivers (from nvidea website), and that didn't help.

Ideas/Suggestions?

A few thoughts.

Check the Event Viewer - found in Control Panel under Administrative tools and look for errors relating to this problem. This may tell your more about the problem. There may be a link for more help here.

This may be a Firewall problem - Not the standard XP one but third-party one you have installed - Like Norton. Try disabling it temporarily to test.

Some AVI files use the DIVX codec go to DIVX.COM and download the free player which will install the codec.

Try uninstalling media player and downloading/installing the latest version from Microsoft.

This may not be a Video problem but a Sound problem. Install new Sound drivers.

Make sure you have done ALL the updates from Microsoft Update site.

On the Nvidia site you can download older versions of the driver. Install one of these. Go back 5 to 10 versions. This has a very good chance of working.
