Errrrrr.... I understand that political campaigns try to spin things in their favor even when the points in question are against them but... come on....

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/10/13/america/NA-POL-US-Elections.php

"We're a couple points down, OK, nationally, but we're right in this game," the veteran Arizona senator said to cheers. "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, they want knowledge and they want vision. We'll give that to America."

{snip}

"We're going to spend a lot of time and after I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," McCain said.

They are down a "couple" of points? The economy has hurt them "a little" over the last few weeks? And McCain is going to kick Obama's butt in the last debate? I am sure they are going to be going toe to toe but there is nothing in the last two debates that would lead one to believe that either side is going to have a decisive debate victory.

Again I KNOW that campaigns can't come out and say "we are in big trouble" but they can't really believe all this stuff can they?

Still, it's better than the all attack all the time style that they have been doing as of late.

McCain's not going to just admit defeat. Say what you want about him, he's a fighter. He'll fight right up until the end and go down swinging. I wouldn't expect anything less from him.

Pointless swagger. If McCain can actually whip ass in that debate, then bully for him. But blustering about it and then not doing it makes him look all that more ridiculous.

Yeah, right...just like a week ago when he told supporters he was going to "take his gloves off" in the second debate. We all saw how well that worked out for him.

Well, he might well have taken the gloves off, but it doesn't matter when you don't score any hits :)

John McCain said:
after I whip his you-know-what in this debate...

No, what? His black ass? It's not gonna happen. If it was going to happen, then it would have already happened, but it didn't. He can come out and exceed expectations, but right now the narrative is that McCain has these crazy supporters, and if he seems to take their crap to Obama, then he'll end up looking really bad.

Note to McCain campaign staff: It is never a good idea for the old white guy to say he is gonna whip the black guy, you know, given history and stuff.

Well, honestly, what do you expect? "Sorry guys, we're losing. May as well pack it up now."

As I said above....

Were I a McCain supporter I would be incredibly dispointed if he didn't fight tooth and nail to the very end. So I think it is at least his INTENT to whup Obama in the next debate, it is only his capability to do that which is in question.

Of course he should fight to the end. He ought to be executing that fight without talking about it ahead of time. That's a real amateur mistake. It's kind of like telling Pakistan out loud what you're gonna do if they dither about getting bin Laden.

If whis were a schoolyard scuffle instead of an election, sure. But since this is an election and the way to win is to talk, then by trying to project an air of confidence, then talking bout the fight IS fighting the fight.

I look at it this way: Either McCain will whip ass Wednesday night, in which case he will gain .. something, or he will not, in which case his boast will ring loud and hollow. If he succeeds, he's no better situated from mouthing off than not. But all that added risk... It's a fool's bargain.

I'd like to hear ideas on exactly how McCain will whip Obama's ass. What rhetoric, what arguments can he use that already haven't been used. I supposed he could ramble on about Ayers or Wright but those are easily refuted with an honest portrayal of history and I'm sure Obama will have answers ready.

Obama is obviously goading him into it (say it to my face). I'm thinking that McCain will not fall into that trap, but crazier things have happened -- in the McCain campaign. A lot crazier.

This is the dumbest point McCain tried to make at the last debate. Big freaking deal, so Obama said we would, under certain circumstances, go into Pakistan and McCain didn't. How stupid do people think Pakistan is. Oh gee, but McCain never said he was going to come in, rats, darn, now what are going to do, we're so surprised.

Honestly, at this point I don't even know if I'm going to watch the third debate. The first two were boring and I don't expect that anything in the debate will make a difference at this stage. That is, unless McCain and Obama literally whup each other's asses - then I'd tune in!

I'm not watching it. The first two between them were horrible. Broken records with no solutions. I thought Obama would be running circles around McCain but it's mostly just finger pointing. Next election there needs to be a better format and a tough moderator (not one that scolds the two but one that asks tough questions and doesn't let them get off the hook if they sidestep it).

I think a lot of people are going to have that same attitude. And when you are 2-0 up, and your team is 3-0 up, people not watching isn't costing you much. When you are trying to come from behind it's toxic.

ETA: And by people I mean undecideds. They have watched 3 debates and every poll I have seen gave all of them to Obama / Biden by the undecideds. Many of them will sit this one out I think.
