Reporter: “Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS?”

Mr. McCain: “Well I think it’s a combination. The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn. He believes – and I was just reading the thing he wrote– that you should do what you can to encourage abstinence where there is going to be sexual activity. Where that doesn’t succeed, than he thinks that we should employ contraceptives as well. But I agree with him that the first priority is on abstinence. I look to people like Dr. Coburn. I’m not very wise on it.”

(Mr. McCain turns to take a question on Iraq, but a moment later looks back to the reporter who asked him about AIDS.)

Mr. McCain: “I haven’t thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don’t know if I would use taxpayers’ money for it.”

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”
What a moron.

He really just needs to give up, man. Social Conservatives aren't going to buy the act, and he just ends up looking like a doofus to his moderate supporters. He should just focus on his senate seat, because the Christian Right OWNS the RNC, and there's no way he'd ever win a Republican primary, at least not now that he's flip-flopped on Iraq.

Yes, what a moron.

He got to where he is because he's a moron.

I would hesitate to call any former POW a moron.

Who are you calling a moron?
He's an aviator who is famous for being shot down.

nevermind.

He is running for president as if he really doesn't want the job.

It is as the OP says, the fundys aren't buying it and the moderates are just getting turned off.

He is running for president as if he really doesn't want the job.

On the contrary, he so desperately wants the job he's afraid to give the "wrong" answer. I've hated McCain for years. His 2000 campaign was such a sham. Psssht- "the Straight-talk Express." He quickly positioned himself as the unofficial referee of American politics.

Well said. I am pretty sure he'll wise up sometime in 2008. I don't see him getting how badly he is painting his own canvas until then.

DR

Why would anyone vote for him? I can see it now if he’s elected:

Aide: “President McCain nuclear missiles are heading towards us”

Mr. McCain: “I haven’t thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don’t know if I would use taxpayers’ money for it.”

Aide: “But sir, what should we do?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Aide: “But sir, you are the President!”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Aide: “But sir, what do you want to tell the Generals?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on incoming missiles – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Aide: “But sir, you ARE the President, shouldn’t we fire the anti-missile missles?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

:)

McCain's pandering to Falwell & Co is getting into a nest of vipers. After all this public groveling, they'll back someone else anyway. McCain will have been played like a fiddle.

i think its possible he interpreted the question as 'does the distribution of condoms prevent aids (vs abstinence education)'.

Gee, I thought McCain was a fluent English speaker.

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say:‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

McCain: Dur.

Who wants to help develop a McCain is senile meme with me? Just drop it in casually to any discussion or debate of the 2008 elections. Treat it like it's known and obvious. Bring up the example of not knowing if condoms help prevent the spread of HIV.

He is running for president as if he really doesn't want the job.

It is as the OP says, the fundys aren't buying it and the moderates are just getting turned off.

This is why presidents are formerly governors, then vice presidents, then generals. Senators and Congresscritters just don't get elected because they are too skilled at appeasing everybody to get the Congress job, and that doesn't stand up when you want a president.

Republicans should keep with their current trend of electing a douche-bag to lead their party and vote for McCain ....
