Some vigilant citizens in Phoenix, Arizona are up in arms over a domed church that they wrongly believe to be a mosque.

Since the distinctive dome shape went up, church leaders said they have received phone calls from concerned neighbors who've mistaken the building for an Islamic mosque.

Can't see it being that many people.
But the timing seems to indicate that it is the dome which made them think of 'Mosque'.

I wonder if the fact that it is a "nondenominational" mega church has anything to do with it? Some of the hardcore fundies hate those as much as hate Catholics Jews and Muslims.

I think it's more a concern that if it has a dome, it will end up as a mosque. The Hagia Sophia has a dome...it became a mosque. See? See? The logic is inescapable.

That was why Teapot Dome was such a big scandal. That's why people protest outside the Seattle Laser Dome, why all evangelical Christians hate the Superdome...and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. I'm pretty sure of it.

Apparently, the church is an Apostolic or Pentacostal church with a mostly Hispanic congregation. They are probably not getting a lot of support from local Catholics, either. It is nice that the local Muslim community has made gestures of friendship toward them. One might hope that some good will come of this senseless fracas.

I stopped by to sign their guest book and offer a bit of encouragement. I will stand against any religious institution that is getting in my face, but I will stand shoulder-to-shoulder (or back to back, if need be) with any attacked by vicious and/or stupid people for no good reason.
