mass shooting at So Cal bar

LA Times says that it was a Sheriff's Sergeant and a California Highway Patrol Officer who went in together. They arrived and engaged the shooter 6 minutes after the first 911 call. The gunman did use at least one smoke bomb.

Los Angeles Times said:
Several people who escaped the bar described a gunman clad in a black shirt, black hat and black glasses. He seemed to concentrate fire on the front of the venue, where there were several employees as soon as he entered, witnesses said...

Nellie Wong, who was celebrating her 21st birthday on Wednesday night, said she dove to the floor when shots rang out. Wong said she believed that the gunman was dressed in a black hoodie, black shirt and black pants with a scarf obscuring his face and that he threw smoke bombs as he entered...

Police had not initially identified a motive and did not believe Long targeted any employees at the bar specifically.

Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long, including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally. The sheriff said a mental health crisis team was called at that time and concluded that Long did not need to be taken into custody.

Mental illness again?

Maybe the guard confronted him?

It almost sounds like the guy has a beef with the place.

Former employee?

Thrown out/banned?
But the number of dead seems too high to be only just employees. I don't know. Maybe he did pick them out one by one. Patrons are going to be roaming and mixed with staff everywhere except for specific employee-only locations.

White supremacist?

TBH - my initial thought when I heard the news of the shooting was that it was a white supremacist upset with the election. When I heard a white male with tattoos, that seemed to bolster my thoughts. But it turns out he was a marine. So that would explain the presence of tattoos (yes, anyone can have tattoos, but for it to have been noted in the report as being heavily tattooed, I expect more than just your normal tattoo).

Not that he can't have been a marine and white supremacists. But, now I'm leaning more towards a marine with PTSD issues.

Apparently he was a victim of battery at another bar back in April. Maybe he just developed a grudge against bars.

Strategic move, I'd guess. Shoot those closest to you to clear the way and reduce the chance of heros

Six minutes for police response. Very fast, but damned if it couldn't have been worse.

Likely a Glock 21, which is California legal. Probably used illegal standard capacity magazines.

California has 10 round limit even for handguns, right ? That's not much of a restriction for handgun. You just have to swap mags more often. Even the typical 2 mags give you 20 shots, quite enough to a lot of damage. Especially if you can shoot, at this guy clearly could.
And inside the building, the Glock is imho even more potent than AR. Easier to conceal, easier to use in confined space, smaller magazines , you can carry more ammo. It only lacks in barrier penetration, compared to AR, but you are unlikely to find things it can't shoot through in a bar.

Btw. there is really no need to guess what could have been the reason at this moment. Sure, everybody has agenda to push, but that's just that. Simply wait, we'll see.

I read that he shot at least 18 times, but I don't know if that's true. He probably reloaded a magazine clip at least once, right? The cop was shot multiple times and I think I read that the security guard was also shot multiple times. That's a lot of bullets and he killed a total of 12 people.

How would we already know how many shots he fired?
I think I read that it was a witness counting gunshots. Something like "I heard 16 to 18 shots".

But it's not confirmed. He must have used at least 12 shots to kill the 12 people. But two were said to be shot multiple times, so we are at like at least 14 bullets.
