Mass shooting and grenade attack in Belgium

My gut tells me they're probably xenophobic far right loonies attacking the liberal majority. I found out today that a racist white Pole I knew was jailed last month for attacking a Muslim family with a knife after smoking a joint and getting "paranoid", so that might be skewing my perspective. : (

It appears to have been an attempted jail-break. Three reported attackers, one of which killed himself at some point.

The situation is still very confused. Witnesses are reporting up to three attackers, city officials now say there was only one, who is now dead.

From the BBC:
Greg Lenco, a journalist at local newspaper La Meuse-Liège, described the scene.

"We saw four explosions. I was in a building 200m from Saint Lambert Square," he said.

"It was quite incredible. We saw one man on the roof who tried to kill people. This man killed himself with a grenade."

However some news outlets are describing the grenades as thunderflash style firecrackers.



Telegraph reporting that suspect Nordine Amraini was armed with an AK type rifle and was killed by police at the scene.

4 people confirmed dead, 40 + injured. Several people in critical condition including an 18 month old boy. :(


I don't see how an attack on a bus stop from a roof top could be an escape from a courtroom. :confused:


ETA: Now police are reporting that Amrani had been due to report to a police station to discuss charges against him. Amrani, two teenage boys and a 75 year old woman dead. BBC now says 75 people wounded.

According to CNN there are four dead and 119 wounded after a lone gunman open fire and threw hand grenades.
According to Swedish media there are at least six killed and 123 wounded.

Same has been reported here on a local German TV channel. Liége is really close to me, about an hour's drive.

It has also been reported that the lone assailant is a known criminal (had been jailed for MJ and illegal possession of firearms). No political motive.

It's still unknown how he died. No confirmed report from the police that he'd been shot. Rumors say he blew himself up accidentally with a grenade.

It's doubtful he blew himself up with a grenade as the 'grenades' were airsoft-grade flashbangs known as thunderflashes . You'd have to try very hard to kill someone with that.

Most likely he either ate his own bullet, or his gun malfunctioned - the jury is still out on that.

Current toll is 5 - 6 deaths and ~120 injured.
 
The guy was a criminal of North African descent.
But it wan't a political or religious attack as far as police can tell now.

Turns out he transferred all his money to his girlfriend, wrote her a goodbye note, killed his cleaning lady before commencing with the attack.

Everybody is speculating about a motive, but as usual the motive is: unstable bastard kills innocent people for his own incomprehensible reasons.

Is that confirmed? There seem to be an awful lot of wounded. By comparison the Columbine shooters murdered 13 people and wounded 21, mostly from point blank range.

The way 'wounded' are counted causes this. Anyone who requests any kind of aid - physical or psychological - be it from injuries, shock, or whatever, is counted amongst the wounded/injured.
