Mary Trump's Book

I don't think there's any mystery as to what gets to Trump. He hates to be mocked. He hates to have his intelligence questioned. He hates to be compared to greater men/women and shown to be lacking. It's not difficult to make ads or make speeches using those.

I think he has as-of-yet unexplored daddy issues and guilt about the death of his brother.

He doesn't like people close to him talking about him behind his back. He knows they do, from news reports and the recent spate of "tell-all" books such as Bolton's. The Lincoln project is also tugging that chain right now.

This article has a few more assertions from the book.

Perhaps the least surprising is that Trump once complimented Mary's boobs. He's said the same (and worse) in public about his daughter, so why wouldn't he say the same in private about his niece?

The cool thing about the SAT story is that, even though it's fifty years old, it's something that people can relate to. They might have trouble thinking about bankrupt casinos, or tough decisions in the situation room, or being wealthy enough that porn stars will spank you just because they want something from you, but they can relate to the SAT, and they can know that the smart people didn't have to pay someone to take the test for them.

Allegedly, of course.

Sadly I can see this being shrugged off as "wouldn't you have liked someone else to sit your SAT" or "See he was smart back then, didn't waste his time with liberal education crap he was already making money".

I've always said that the world leader from antiquity who Trump is the most like is Gaius Germanicus (Caligula) based on their mutual interest in incest.

You forgot to add the God complex.

ETA: Though to be fair, deification of emperors was pretty common.

Three points of difference immediately strike me: 1) Caligula was reported to be very attractive, 2) despite the reputation that lingered in popular consciousness, Caligula was actually popular with the regular people at the time, and 3) after Mary's book revelations, it sounds like Caligula's family was less toxic to grow up in!

eta: the historical leader Trump puts me most in mind of is Peter III of Russia. Pity Melania's no Catherine!

Oh, another book about Trump and how awful and stupid and mean he is.

That's shocking, who knew...

Does anyone remember the super scandalous book... written by Bolt or something like that. I don't know, it was ages ago, like three weeks.

Lesson of the Book:

if you don't want your relatives to air your dirty laundry, give them better Christmas gifts for crying out loud!

Caligula's adoptive father Tiberius had his father murdered and forced him to live on an island with him and his cousin whom he later adopted. Gaius later killed his adoptive son/cousin and probably his mother. That seems just slightly more toxic than Trump's family though there are comparisons to Donny's role in his brother's death.
