Sarah Palin wants to show to the Republican right that she is the true keeper of the Ronald Reagan flame by meeting the late president's closest ally on the world stage.

This is what Palin told Christina Lamb in the Sunday Times:

" I am going to Sudan in July and hope to stop in England on the way. I am just hoping Mrs Thatcher is well enough to see me as I so admire her."

~

This is what one (Thatcher) ally tells me:

"Lady Thatcher will not be seeing Sarah Palin. That would be belittling for Margaret. Sarah Palin is nuts."

Ok, aside from the fact that she's 100% correct about Palin, why are the British putting up a statue of Reagan in a London park on the 4th of July? Is he really that much of a hero over there?

To balance this?

Someone needs to warn the British that the Palins are coming. Paul Revere, where are you?

That place seems only to have a Kennedy memorial...

Having never been to Grosvenor Square, I now realize (thanx wiki) that yawl have other statues there of our dead presidents. FDR and Ike for example. Why is that? Why don't you Brits put up a George Washington, or an Abe Lincoln? Surely they did more for the world than selling some guns to Iran.

Do we, (Americans) have statues in D.C. of dead foreign leaders? I don't recall seeing any there, but then I really wasn't looking...they could be hiding somewhere.

ETA: and why is FDR standing in his statue?

My understanding is that the Old Lady has severe dementia, and is unlikely to be taking visitors of any kind other than family.

I heard that the British Navy fired off a salute to George Washington when news of his death reached them. Pretty extraordinary tribute considering he was a former adversary.

Yup, we Brits have been sucking-up to the Yanks that long. In 1799 we didn't want them getting pally with the French, who'd had a real Revolution by that time. (By 1812 we were well enough ahead in that competition not to care, and the old lion's claws came out ...)

George Washington was a former British officer, so there was some justification :).

Meh. More like a disrespected Officer of Volunteers (then of Militia). Soon, though, he will return to pull the sword from the stone. THEN you'll see...
