Manhattan explosion

Far be it from me to cite television fiction, but I recall one of those forensic shows recently (as in I saw it recently - it may be from a year ago with the delays I get in American shows) where the use of a flip phone was also brought up because they're uncommon, and "the bomb guy" (there's one in every show) said that they're popular for bombs....... but damned if I can recall the rationale he gave.
 
Breaking news CNN...

A suspicious package has been found in Elizabeth, New Jersey, according to Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage. Two men found the package in a waste basket and alerted police when they saw wires and a pipe, the mayor said. The package was detonated by law enforcement authorities and the FBI is on the scene.

On the contrary - they are very popular for cheap pre-paid "burner" phones. They are robust, cheap, reliable, the battery lasts for ages (days/weeks) and the flip cover protects the keypad from unwanted knocks. Walmart does them for less than $15 for instance.

They seem ideal for this particular application.

Additionally, they are trending as smart phone sales plateau.
So, are more common than you might have thought.

It does not seem fairly well assembled. Faulty wiring contradict that. From the description it sounds like black powder explosive and those are so low tech and easy to do that even teens can do one to remotely explode reliably. On an aside I hope for fingerprint, but let us be realistic, if the guy is of average intelligence he bought everything including tape in different shops, and wore at every point gloves even for taping.
 
The New York Times is reporting that the pressure cooker bombs contain an explosive material similar to Tannerite.

From all cell phone they are far easier to open, just screws, cheap, and then you are a few capacitor and transistor aways to make a discharge circuit from the loudspeaker. Fairly trivial.

Apparently someone - a group, most likely - was aiming for a terror spree all over the East Coast. I'd mention a possible motive, but the debate usually dies right after that.

I'd consider that a good thing. The last time there was a successful terror spree in the area, 17 people died and another 13 were wounded - and that was supposed to be just the start of a much larger plan.

I've been told (...and am still trying to locate the news article the person who told me mentioned.) that some idiot went on Facebook and claimed that (a) he was the bomber and (b) that it was done to win greater rights for Homosexuals.

That kind of claim (false or otherwise) is going to have the opposite effect.

I saw mention of that, perhaps on Politico(?), but no screen capture and a claim that it had been taken down. It came. It went. I doubt there's any lasting effect. Whackies with "causes" often take claim for tragedies in the news. And if the whackies don't, there's always Alex Jones to attribute for them.
