Walter Slonopas, 52, resigned as a maintenance worker at Contech Casting LLC in Clarksville after his W-2 tax form was stamped with the number 666.

The Bible calls 666 the "number of the beast," and it's often used as a symbol of the devil. Slonopas said that after getting the W-2, he could either go to work or go to hell.

"If you accept that number, you sell your soul to the devil," he said.

I'm puzzled as to why his company wants him back. There must be plenty of well-qualified unemployed people who aren't religious lunatics who'd jump at the chance of filling the vacancy.

They've brought him back before when quit over getting 666 on his time card so it would look bad to not offer him his position back again.

Walter should wonder why he's always running into the mark of the beast so often at work.

I remember back when I was a young scamp in the Navy. I was standing in the pay line with my paycheck and my military ID card. They had a Marine standing guard and he was making sure the info on the ID matched the info on the check. The Marine notice that there is a sequential 666 in my social security number, and he said, "That's not good, man. That's the devil. You should get that changed." Yes, mister jarhead, I'll get right on that. I'll go request a new social security number "Because Satan." :rolleyes:

Funny, my mom tells a similar story. Obviously for the same reason.

On that note, is it even remotely possible to get your social security number changed?

Yes, but I think you need a good reason, for example if you have a good reason to hide from someone, or if someone used your existing SS number to commit fraud.

Short answer: Yes, but you don't so much change it as get a new number, and both the new and the old ones refer to you (exceptions for some circumstances).

Scratch that, not quite the best answer.

Here's the SSA itself on the subject:
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/79

Generally, only the following circumstances are used to assign a different number:
  • Sequential numbers have been assigned to members of the same family and are causing problems;
  • More than one person has been assigned, or is using, the same number;
  • An individual has religious or cultural objections to certain numbers or digits in the original number;
  • A victim of identity theft continues to be disadvantaged by using the original number; or
  • Situations of harassment, abuse, or life endangerment, including domestic violence, has occurred.

So yeah, you can change it for a 666.

The USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) was to be called the Manta Ray (devilfish) but was changed to placate those who thought it was too much. I also heard another story that there would be a prayer group on the mess decks anytime it went to test depth (max operating depth) and on one such occasion a man interrupted the prayer session to proclaim "God doesn’t have the guts to sink this boat!"

I have found no evidence that the Hawkbill was previously named the Manta Ray or that the other two anecdotes are anything more than a sea story.

So... "Because three sequential sixes is the number of the beast" might not be a valid excuse?

...

Oh wait, this America. It might just be so.

He can quit his job all he wants, but he's still going to have to use that form to file his taxes. Someone should tell that guy to just "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" and STFU.

What gets me is that the number wasn't on his W-2; if I read the article right it was just written on the outside of the envelope...

This must be a misprint. As he's not going to work, he's going to hell now :confused:

My work phone number has 666 in it. Personally, I like it.

You work for the Department of Justice in Vancouver? (all their telephone numbers are area code+666+xxxx). Somehow it seems appropriate for a government legal office.

Well if he's ever in Ireland he'd better not have any law enforcement issues....

Besides which 6**6**6 = 1.0314425e+28 ;)
Do you mean (6^6)^6) a la Heinlein?

In Ireland all Garda Siochana landlines start 666.

The good news for his coworkers was that it was always easy to keep him from stealing their lunches and office supplies...just scribble 666 on everything.

I work in a zip code that ends with 666...I wonder how many nutjobs have complained about this...

Hmm.

Maybe that's what I need to do. Move somewhere with a 666 zip code, get a 666 phone number, buy a house with the 666 number (or 66 6th street, that'd work too). I wonder if I'd be safe from the religious crazies then.

Or if I'd end up attracting all the ones out to save my soul.

*sigh*

Private island still seems to be the better choice. Only $9,476,234 more to save up for it! ;)
