Seems he burned down his Mom's house, with her in it, then killed his Grand Parents and an Uncle, then several random others before he killed himself. Total dead either 10 or 11, seems to be some conflicting reports.

Why can't these SOB's start with themselves, and be done with it, without taking the innocent with them?

Anyway, this happened in small town USA. About 2000 population in his town. Hellava way to get in the news. :(

You answered your own question.

I think for some people it's a matter of going against their nature. Guy A is a socialpath and thinks nothing of killing and hiding the bodies. Guy B is moral citizen and was driven to kill for whatever reason and the sheer guilt from the monumental crime they just committed causes them to crack. They know their life is over. They will never live down the sad stares of family, friends, or community. They know they are already dead so, hey, might as well go out with a bang. Suicide by cop. Plus they get the added sensation of being famous for 15 minutes. "This will show those bullies in high school what I'm capable of."

That does raise an interesting question . . . I wonder if a tragedy like this would be so likely if it was not for liberal gun ownership laws?

In a similar incident handled years ago by our department, a young mother went to a nearby department store and purchased a thoroughly-legal lever-action hunting rifle.

Then, on a Sunday morning, she killed her husband, four children, and herself.

Unless we decide to limit the populace to the ownership of muzzle-loading rifles, having more restrictive ownership laws would have little effect.

We had a shooting here in Mason over the weekend. A guy got shot in the hand. Yes, this is a major news story here. Also over the weekend we had a gun show. The shooting and the gun show headlines were side-by-side. I don't know if they did that on purpose or if it was just chance, but I'm sure it raised some eyebrows.

Well I wonder. Could it be that the wide availability of firearms in the US is causative of people snapping and going on murderous rampages? Or here's a thought--perhaps the increased ability to use lethal force in self-defence actually works to lower the equilibrium level of indiscriminate homicides.

Maybe there are "studies" about this?
