Major GOPer Issa calls for Special Prosecutor!!!!!

<>
So back to my original point: these meetings with the ambassador were no secret and were known to the public. It's just the left's latest Witchhunt du jour. Why would Sessions lie about events that he knew were known to the public?.

Yup, that's a good question. Maybe he can explain it to us.

<>
ETA: just to clarify, I'm in favor of Sessions recusing himself from the investigation,

Sessions isn't in favor of recusing himself, according to your link.

not the hysterics calling for him to resign as Attorney General.

Hysterics? Okay ....

I read it thusly:

“I’m not aware of any of those activities,” he responded. He added: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians [in that capacity].”

He did have a conversation with the Russian ambassador in his Senate office in his capacity as a senior member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee.
Not saying that the above sentence is true. But that would be his defense, and it's a pretty good one.

NPR report this morning mentioned that Sessions met with ambassadors from several other countries as well, but only after he became recognized as a surrogate for Trump. Apparently meetings with foreign ambassadors are rare for regular armed forces committee members.

My take? I think foreign ambassadors probably sought out meetings with Sessions when they realized he was inside the Republican nominee's (or soon to be nominee's) circle. Not to ink nefarious deals with him. Not to ask him how they could help his guy win the election. But probably just to be friendly and schmooze it up a little. Part of being successful in politics or diplomacy is in recognizing those people who have the potential to get power. The people who already have it are already too busy to make new friends. Talking about the grandchildren and asking him to pass on their good wishes to Trump would have been sufficient, and probably all that was authorized by their respective governments.

Great speculation. Might even be so. If this was not a skeptics' site, perhaps we should accept your word.

But this is a skeptics' site, and so we should wait and see whether Sessions's meetings were innocent and inconsequential. And, let me be clear, it might be so. It might be nothing much. But I'd like to know a wee bit more, that's all.

We were fortunate to learn that Flynn's discussions weren't so innocent. I'm guessing that we don't have such clear evidence when it comes to Sessions, but it sure would be nice if we did.
