Los Alamos auditor/whistleblower Tommy Hook was apparently beaten and threatened to keep his mouth shut.

Los Alamos whistleblower "Tommy Hook is still hospitalized today after being brutally assaulted over the weekend," the Project on Government Oversight is saying. "A group of three to four assailants threatened Hook to keep silent, in apparent reference to his upcoming Congressional testimony on fraud at Los Alamos."

Sounds quite brazen. Anyone (calling Santa Fe posters!) got details?

More story here . From the pic, looks like they worked over Hook pretty good. :(

Why do I get the feeling that 99% of whistleblowers end up wishing they hadn't.

Because you're a paranoid who distrusts any "establishment" and substitutes the product of your imagination for fact?

If "they" really wanted to keep him silent, quick one to the back of the head would do the trick. Otherwise "they" don't seem to gain anything from this.

Call me a cynic, but part of me wondered if he didn't manage to get himself beat up because he hadn't been getting enough attention lately.

Not exactly what you suspected, but not too far off:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/09/national/main700588.shtml

"The investigation is "leaning toward a fight in the parking lot as a result of Mr. Hook backing into a pedestrian," Johnson said. He said after Hook hit the pedestrian, he exited his vehicle, "at which time the confrontation escalated into a physical attack." "

At a press conference Tuesday, Hook's wife, Susan, said her husband had been lured to the bar by a late-night phone call from an unidentified man requesting a meeting. She said her husband told her the man never showed up but as he was leaving the topless bar's parking lot, a group of men pulled him from his car and beat him.
"Honey, I had to go to the topless bar to meet a stranger. Really, I'd never go there otherwise".

My take: He goes to the nudie bar, gets into a fight and gets beat up, then makes up the story about the phone call and threats so his wife won't get mad about him going to the nudie bar.

Oooh. Blame the victim, anyone?

Anyone seen Cheney lately? I have a strong suspicion he did this. He's a very hands-on Regent/President.

It seems more than appropiate in this case. Though I don't doubt they told him to 'keep his mouth shut', it likely had nothing to do with whistleblowing and a lot to do with mouthing off the the wrong people while more than slightly inebreated.

ETA: I don't believe his "meeting an informant" story one little bit. Neither do the cops, it seems.

Where did I blame the victim? In what way? I said nothing about the fight being at all his fault. Only the CYA story afterward.

Nah. If he didn't kick Pat Leahy's ass he's not going to bother with this guy.
