Long range shooting accident.

Stealth rifle? Only when fired from very long range.

Well, if has a muzzle velocity of 2700 fps, and the speed of sound at sea level is 1116 fps, then you could send the entire magazine at a target before the sound of the first round hits, at a range of a mile, I believe.

Plus, hearing the shots and being able to pinpoint the source and return fire are tasks of wildly different difficulty. I couldn't possibly spot a prone man at a range of a mile who spent the least effort to hide while bullets sang past me, I don't know about you.

In addition to offering details of the incident, he uses fear mongering to promote his political views and accuses the man who came forward and admitted to shooting his rifle nearby to be a fall guy for someone else.

Curious. The only reason somebody would reject a direct confession is if they already had a different idea of who the perpetrator might be. So, who does this person think is responsible, then, if it wasn't the person who confessed?

It takes a bullet 2.9 seconds to travel a mile if it starts at 2700 fps and has a ballistic coefficient of .99. The noise of the muzzle blast takes 4.7 seconds to travel the same distance. It is difficult to bring the target back into the crosshair (at long range) after recoil and pull the trigger for the second round before the sound from the first gets to the target, more so for a full mag of ten rounds.

If the terrain is flat, I might be able to pinpoint a sniper’s location at short range, but not at long range. That is why I said the word stealth only applied at long range. :) The muzzle brake also tends to disturb vegetation and dirt around it making it harder to stay concealed. These rifles are extremely loud. I was unfortunate enough to stand next to one without hearing protection on, I did not get normal hearing back in my left ear until the next day.

It sounds like the fundamental problem is that conventional shooting ranges aren't sufficiently idiot-proof to keep the most idiotic gun owners from firing the occasional shot over the range and into some poor sod standing a mile or two away. However that problem might well be exacerbated if said most-idiotic patrons were using weapons with particularly large lethal ranges.
Every time you make something idiot-proof, the universe makes a better idiot.
