Local News

Jaysus, I was in Dublin airport yesterday. Though luckily I flew out five hours before this.
Indeed, the chaos appears to have been worse than usual afterwards. I do sense a certain defensiveness in the airport police comments, I wonder what happened...

The guy has now been charged with attempted murder, along with several other charges relating to assault and possession of a weapon intended to cause harm.

Man charged with attempted murder over stabbing of two female students at Australian National University

I'm also seeing reports that it's the same guy who attacked several people with a baseball bat a couple of years ago.

A close friend of mine crosses Fellows Oval every day to get lunch, and she was lucky enough to have been delayed at a separate appointment, and wasn't there at the time of the attack. She would have been, if not for that delay.

The airport peelers aren't that well resourced and are a private company (which explains the first bit). Wouldn't be too surprised they're worried that the job will be taken over by the proper peelers.

They're DAA's rent a cops, almost without exception (and I worked in the airport for 18 months) they're idiots.

Problem is that while they're nothing but puffed up bouncers (and we know what Irish bouncers are like), they've got actual police powers on site. Plus they run the fire engines.

They have *limited* powers, as Authorised Officers, on airport property. Something I've had to point out to them on occasion.

Seems a local couple to me are making 40 odd grand a month selling videos of themselves doing the twisty tango. Looks like a few people in the comments section don't seem impressed with at least one person saying they have reported them to HMRC.

Another commentator:

"Excellent article, it sums up the once respected local newspaper called the Echo beautifully, 100% garbage, disgusting low-class gutter dwelling garbage. Who the hell wants to know what dirty, worthless degenerates are getting up to, online prostitution and you advertise it. An insult to the majority of men and women everywhere. Just hope their children get taken into care."

Someone's got their panties in a bunch.

The probability that these people would brag about their porn business making £40k per month if they were not paying their taxes is approximately zero. To steal one of the other comments: it's totally boner-fide

The acts of our home-grown right-wing and similar thuggis idiots during their "protest" outside Leinster House last Wednesday are still rumbling in the news.Hopefully it'll lead to a crack-down on the fascists.

Touch wood. Much as I dislike the current government parties, I recognise they are doing what in their view is best for the country.

The fascists, however, have no such intentions.

Meanwhile our city is arguing in the city council over whether a certain street should be called "Race Track Road" or "Racetrack Road." And it's getting heated.

Boston just built a brand new subway extension and it's already non-functional like the rest of the subway system. Literally crawling at 3 mph at some places.

100% pure doomerism on this one. Better things aren't possible and I'm a fool for ever thinking otherwise. You will sit in your car and go 10 mph for hours a day down miles of congestion because Boston doesn't know how to lay down rail in year of our lord 2023.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/09/26/metro/mbta-green-line-extension-new-slow-zones/

New Green Line extension already so defective that trains are forced to move at walking pace

Less than one year after the final branch of the much-heralded Green Line extension opened for business, the MBTA said a problem with the tracks has reduced train speeds to just 3 miles per hour along stretches that add up to more than a mile.

Even by the T’s low standards in recent years, it’s an extraordinary development: Tracks that opened for passenger service to Union Square in March 2022 and to Medford last December and were shut down for repairs in recent months are now so defective, the T says, that trains are moving slower than many people walk.

T spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said the new slow zones, 11 on the Medford branch and 3 on the Union Square branch, are necessary after inspections this month found the rails are too close together at many spots. Operating trains at full speed on tracks that are too narrow risks derailment, track experts said.

Why isn't it "Racetrack Track" or "Race Track Track"? Missed opportunity there.

But not as good as Chesapeake VA's Great Great Bridge Bridge. ("Great Bridge" is the name of an area, it had a bridge in it, then a bigger bridge was built. It makes sense if you've been there long enough to not think of "Great Bridge" as anything other than the name of a place. To everybody else it seems like the speaker is having a medical episode.)
