Literacy

You must be reading our minds and using telekenesis to create words on the screen. I think you should claim the million dollar prize.

I'm afraid not. A really smart parrot reads the threads to me, while a descendant of Borel's monkey types my responses...

I should make it clear that I speak not a word of english. I note the confused expression on your face. I can understand, for you see I have had to give this speech a number of times. Allow me to explain. Everything I am now saying I have learned to speak phonetically, but as to the syntax and the individual meanings of the words, I haven't a clue, so again I must reiterate, I speak no english.

One of the things that irritates me about studies like this is that they always concentrate on high-school or college students. But the results are probably the same for the rest of the population. It's always something like "Sixty percent of college students can't find Afghanistan on a map." Well guess what. I doubt most 50 or 60 year olds could find it either. [/end of rant]

I, however, learned that in 8th Grade. ;) I had a good Social Studies/Geography teacher which took the first Iraq War as a great opportunity to tell us all about that particular area. Bits of the interior of Africa I get mixed up a lot, but I can pretty much point out most of the Middle East now.

And I'm shabby on most of Eastern Europe as my class ended just as the Berlin Wall was falling. Oh well, something to look up on those boring days at home.
