Limbaugh Takes a Shot at Atheists/Agnostics

The problem isn't liberals or conservatives, Democrats or Republicans, but tribal thinkers on both sides.
Except the tribals in power now happen to be Republicans. They're the ones capable of putting action behind their stupid rhetoric right now.

From a liberal atheist, let me just say, "Amen".

We all evolved with an "us vs. them" tribal instinct. Once we've joined our tribe, there is an enormous tendency to
  1. try to collect and pass along bits of evidence that make the other side look bad
  2. ignore or downplay positive accomplishments by the other side
  3. be an apologist for the wrongdoings of people on our own side
  4. adopt 90-95% of the common viewpoints of our side as our own
And if you read this list and afterwards think, "Yeah, the other side does that sort of thing all the time..." then you're probably part of the problem.:D

IMHO, it is the single biggest problem facing the USA these days. The problem isn't liberals or conservatives, Democrats or Republicans, but tribal thinkers on both sides.

Not to stray too far off-topic, but I agree with this. This tribal "us vs. them" mentality seems to be one of the core problems with humanity. Arabs vs. Jews, Indians vs. Pakistanis, Christians vs. Muslims, communists vs. capatalists, etc. Is there a single term for this mentality? Any suggested reading?

A good starting point might be Benjamin Barber's Jihad Vs. McWorld. Deals very effectively with the whole tribalistic mentality.

And yet almost all I listen to is opinion (of facts) and not facts. It's the nature of the beast. Rush is an entertainer (and admits it). His sthick (sp?) is appealing to the moderate to far right republicans (I think he well understands the difference between conservative and republican but does his best to dismiss it).

I also listen to far-left radio personalities when I can find a station that carries them. I find them right (in my opinon) far less often than rush. I find them misinformed far more often than rush (spinning the facts really). I find them less than entertaining far more so than rush. Perhaps that's why it is so very difficult to find same said station. NPR seems to be the last solid holdout for them, in this area at least.

There are some on the right that I can't listen too; Hannity and Dr. Larua would be two examples.

This is exactly correct. It is also exactly why the liberal radio shows that they have put on so far have failed. Nobody wants a liberal version of Rush. Who wants a liberal with his head up his @%%. But liberal versions of Rush is what they've been putting on so far, or as much of it as I've heard anyway.

Give Bill Mayer a liberal radio show and he'll attract a much bigger audience I bet. Not to say that I think Bill gets it right all the time, I know he doesn't. But, he gets a lot right.

I really don't think liberal is the proper label for Bill. But I am certain that he isn't a conservative republican.

Listening to Hannity or Rush makes me think that being dumb is definitely a requirement for being a conservative republican type of person.

Oh, and by the way, thanks for calling about 50% of America idiots, including myself. With an attitude like that, it's no wonder liberals lost the last two presidential elections. Americans generally don't take kindly to people who look down their nose at them.
I'd say that over 90% of Americans are idiots - that's based on 49 years of living amongst them. You have a lot of company - pity it is quantity rather than quality.

I'm not a liberal or a conservative. Think again.

If they don't want to be looked down upon, they need to become worthy of respect. Ball's in their court.

A wise man once said that once you start dividing people into "us" and "them" you automatically become one of "them." Reference the two posts prior to this one for an example of that kind of tribal mentality. That gets us nowhere fast.

On the other hand, I do kind of enjoy government gridlock sometimes. The less they get done, the more freedom I retain.

Unfair! After saying something silly earlier in this thread, you come up with something that I absolutely agree with.

No, this was something he said this week, because he mentioned a child-porn case that broke a few days ago.

I believe the quote ended with "...or without God."

You could take any quote from any time, and it would all still be just the same. You'd think people would just get bored with him after so many times hearing exactly the same rant.

It would be interesting to take a dump of his transcripts, write a computer program to scramble all the sentences, and see it they make any less sense.

He started as an opportunistic con artist.

He's been playing to idiots for so long that he has become one of them.

I heard a 'liberal' radio host over here, Phillip Adams, interviewing G Gordon Liddy some years ago. It was a friendly chat, and at the end Adams basically asked Liddy if his whole persona wasn't just an act he put on to make money. Liddy didn't deny it at all, he tacitly acknowledged the fact.

IMS, he was charged but there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. The state attempted to prove that he was Doctor Shopping but Rush's lawyers were successful in squashing that evidence...or attempt to get evidence. Doctor/Patient relationship precedent and what not.

Rush accepted the ACLU's help in that aspect of the investigation - can one imagine stranger bedfellows?

But what about the ex-maid who went on record saying that she supplied Rush with cigar boxes full of drugs in exchange for cigar boxes full of money in restaurant parking lots?

Rush is right about atheists

After all you NEVER hear about a Christian being accused of any sexual impropriety – right?

Here in MN we just had a church raised raised Christian boy get a life sentence for shooting his dad to death & then chasing his mom down to shotgun her to death. I’m sure that would not have happened if they had posted the ten commandments at his school.

What’s that? Oh . . . never mind.
