Life pushed back

You're right. Young Earthers won't like it, But how does this jive with the Genesis story? How do Old Earthers see Genesis?

Old Earthers are still creationists. And they may very well believe in the actual fall but interpret day differently. (From my memeory: "A thousand years is like a day to the Lord")

How do xians view this?
That the majority of atheists must not be very intelligent otherwise they would know that it's the minority of the christians that believe in creationism.

Thank you for asking anyway. I always enjoy to express my opinion about the atheism that is en vogue in this forum. :)

Since we can't really ask the author what they intended you are going to have great fun aplying this to the bible.

One can never be absolutely certain in every detail, of course.

But consider whoever wrote Genesis in its current form (perhaps 250 BCE or thereabouts), or whatever previous writings and folktales contributed to it.

Very unlikely (I'd say impossible) that he (maybe she, there's that Prophetess Hulda theory) considered either Darwinism and its successor theories or even the various flavors of "creation science" as we have them today.

One can plausibly infer that the book of Jonah was originally intended as fable not history, based on internal evidence.

Saying the same of Genesis is a bit of a stretch, but perhaps defensible.

But any interpretation that tries to squeeze Genesis into the mold of science, even "creation science", is clearly historical nonsense.

Jews 3000 years ago believed in neither natural selection nor dinosaurs on the ark. Such things were totally oustide anything that anyone had considered.

You argument fails because in most cases the ultimate author is considered to be god who of course is beyond human understanding (hmm does this give me a logical reason why theoryogy is a watse of time acording to it's own logic?) in most defintions used by christians.

Edited to add: I think the genral lesson is that once you postilate a god with certian properties most of logic goes out of the window.

In practice most christian take the view that genesis has very little to do with history and science.

I'm sure you're right about a majority of Christians, but don't be so quick to call American atheists unintelligent.

Here in the USA, Christian young earth creationists (not just Christian folks who believe God started it all), while not a majority are nearly so. And definitely a majority in some states.

It's far from a settled issue over here, sorry to say.

I am not sure if that holds for the US.

And don't forget that cafeteria Christians (those who pick and choose) aren't real Christians anyway. ;)

Catholics are not the problem in this case.

You will have difficulties in characterizing him as a cafeteria Christian. But who knows we are in the <strike through>Humor section</strike through> Religion forum of JREF.

BTW have atheists concluded on the definition atheism? What's the definition of this week?

Not only is he not a Christian ... He's the Anti-Christ! :D

Same as last week and the weeks before that for me.

A person who lacks a belief in God(s).

Edit: Shucks ... now I have given you my definition of Atheist and not Atheism.

But no, we haven't gotten to agree on a definition for that yet

Atheism is simply unbelief in God or the gods.

But there is no denying that among atheists around here there are certain other ideological tendencies.

But I say tendencies not doctrines. There is no Pope of atheism to keep us in line or define us.

Nor any prophet that we all follow.

Neither Randi, Paul Kurtz, Bertrand Russell, Charles Darwin, nor Robert Ingersoll, admirable as all those men may be.
