Libertarians might run someone against Rand Paul

The Libertarians in KY are not happy with Rand Paul.

Despite his pedigree as the son of former Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul, Libertarian Vice Chairman Joshua Koch said Rand Paul has betrayed the party's values with stands he's taken, and they were considering finding a candidate to run for the seat.

Looks like junior really wants the job and is moving towards the GOP mainstream instead of sticking to his principles. Not a bad move considering some of his recent statements.

That depends on what you define as GOP Mainstream. Paul has deserted his Libertarian priciples to appeall to the Religious Right/Tea Party crowd,if you define them as the GOP mainstream..which I am not sure of.

Yes, this was entirely predictable. Afterall Lil' Paul showed last week that he's too embarrassed by his libertarian core principles to actually admit to them.

As far as I can tell, he's not thrown any bones specifically to the Religious Right -- and the Tea Party crowd that aren't religious right nutcases are the libertarians.

I'd be interested to see how you what libertarian principles he's deserted in favor of that particular group.

I think Spindrift had it right; he's deserting his principles to appear more centrist (e.g., backing off on his statement that businesses should have the right to discriminate or that the Civil Rights Act was a bad thing...)

According to the libertarian group interviewed in the article, Rand Paul is supporting big-government socially-conservative positions such as banning abortion & same-sex marriage. In addition, he is endorsing the idea of keeping troops in Iraq & Afghanistan - a stance contrary to libertarianism, according to those interviewed.

Paul is, as of this point, nothing more than a socially-conservative Republican who came to prominence via the Tea Party. The TP has been taken over by the religious wingnuts, just as I predicted - which is why Paul has made the moves he has of late on these issues.

I've heard his defenders claim otherwise because his full name is Randal, but the fact that he is campaigning under the name "Rand" and accepts the nickname without protest might suggest otherwise.
