Somebody who doesn't feel comfortable they can put their faith to one side and make decisions based on the best secular reasoning isn't fit in my opinion to be an mp let alone party leader.

Farron seems to be skirting close to that line with his comments.

To me it seems silly to be a member of a political party which by its name is clearly liberal when your religion is deeply conservative

Oh, okay. I have seen references to him online as a traitor for being pro-EU. Still Clegg's defence was that they didn't want to leave the U.K. without a government so had to compromise somewhere.

Well, traitor was a bit strong in hindsight, so I'd be more willing to go with oathbreaker.

Possibly but IMO there is a basic contradiction between a socially liberal (and humanist) party like the LibDems and fundamentalist religion. It would be like being a Conservative member of parliament but be in favour of nationalisation of the means of production .

While that seems likely, I don't think it's actually always the case. It is possible, if unfortunately uncommon, for a person to have very conservative religious beliefs but to honor the idea of secular government.
