Letterman scandal

Totally not what I saw at all.

What I saw Letterman doing was taking the reigns of the topic and driving the conversation. From that point on, despite the criticisms that can rightly be levied on him for fooling around on his wife, the fact is that he's established himself as the person with the credibility to discuss what actually happened and put the accuser/blackmailer's feet over the coals in public view. In doing so, he turned the tables on someone who was doing something that people appear to consider at least as bad as cheating or worse, and as a result he was able to ride the media coverage on this from the stance of a victim instead of an aggressor. The fact that he's got a sense of humor and was able to leverage that for laughs and for light-hearted (though tenuous) support gives him the opportunity to play the publicity game from a slight vantage point of moral high ground, while at the same time he had the savvy to publicly voice his humility about having his work cut out for him at home and apologizing to both his wife and his staff.

I'll bet plenty that Letterman consulted with the network and legal counsel before airing the dirty laundry, and that it was agreed-upon ahead of time how it would be done. He was ready following the weekend of gossip with at least five minutes of monologue that was well-crafted and written specifically to address the topic while deflating the outrage.Even his seemingly sarcastic apology to Palin seemed to be placed after his apologies to family and staff specifically to clip the predictable barbs from the Palin supporters who have been jumping with glee at the knowledge of this news. Absolutely nothing of Letterman's handling of the issue came across even slightly ad-libbed or unconsidered, and he performed it deftly and came across sincerely enough that I think most of the television audiences out there are convinced that he's not a bad guy, as well as likely to consider any Palin-esque attempts to use it as an attack vector poor form and petty.

You see, Letterman had less to lose the whole time. The blackmailer had their whole scheme to lose if Letterman went public. Palin and supporters had little to gain as far as moral high ground and much to lose as far as political capital if they attempt to ride the topic further. Comedians make careers out of allowing themselves to be taken down a notch or two and building themselves back up through jokes and teasing, and what Letterman did here was control how many pegs he got knocked down. Call it class or public image skill or whatever, Letterman figured out the most beneficial way to handle it and did his best to make sure it went that way. So far it seems to have been done very well.

Point taken. Still, it's was stupid to get involved with subordinates, period.

An executive I once worked with had been a company CEO who had to deal with this kind of thing all the time. He would fire anyone who was involved in such a relationship, simply because of the liability involved. It's stupid and dangerous for the company to tolerate it.

I agree. My policy is "don't **** where you eat," plain and simple. Whether CEO or mail carrier, it's usually not the best of ideas.

Some of you are not paying attention again.
1) Dave didn't cheat on his wife, ever. He's only been married for 6 months. He may have cheated on the woman who eventually became his wife, but there's a really important distinction between cheating on your girlfriend and cheating on your wife.
2) Dave's current wife of 6 months, Regina Lasko, was a staffer on his show when it was on CBS. So everyone who is lecturing about dating staff members (i.e., "It's stupid to get involved with subordinates"), etc., in the same post as they mention Dave's poor wife is making a silly argument, since his wife was one of those staff members.
3) He's dated Lasko since 1986, according to whatever I've read. But it is not clear if this was 23 uninterrupted years, or an off-and-on relationship, or what. No one has said. It is entirely possible that Dave has done nothing wrong whatsoever besides not telling his wife that during times when they were broken up, he dated other staffers.

Correct. He cheated on the mother of his child.

How many other staff members did he purposely have children with?

I wonder why Letterman then said that he has his work cut out for him to make it up to Regina if he has "done nothing wrong besides not telling her that he dated other staffers during times when they were broken up?" Obviously, Lettermen made no such distinction about whether his relationship with Regina was on or off when he pursued his crew for sex.

Apart from that Demi Moore and Mike Douglas movie, you never hear of women doing this kind of thing. Why don't we hear of Oprah grabing some young studly intern?

Correct. He cheated on the mother of his child.
The time frame hasn't been revealed. It could have been more than 5 years ago.

Oh, I get it... if you purposely have children with your subordinates, that makes it okay? ;)
It's either okay or it's not.

True - he made no distinction. You sort of cut off my quote, though. Do you have to quote me out of context to make your point?

I don't know if you're aware of this, but having children doesn't preclude you from sleeping around. <insert thousands of examples here>

Oh, I don't know if you all are aware of this little tidbit of info, but Regina Lasko was a Late Show staff member. So if you have a problem with interoffice dating, or employers dating employees, perhaps you need to go rethink your argument.

I guess NOW does also? If only Letterman was in a position to guarantee abortion on demand, he would have escaped their wrath as William Jefferson managed to.

"The National Organization for Women calls on CBS to recognize that Letterman's behavior creates a toxic environment and to take action immediately to rectify this situation. With just two women on CBS' board of directors, we're not holding our breath."

Why should Letterman be heckled for simply being HUMAN? People cheat all the time, yet they never get punished to the point of extorsion. What he did is neither wrong or right, It is just how you look at the "issue". Who are we to judge what is wrong and right for somebody else? Leave the man alone and get on with your own lives.

Geez, this is the same as attacking celebrity incidents, which no one has any reason to care about

Did you ever criticize Letterman for heckling celebrities who cheat? Judging human frailties is how he has made his living since 1982. The tables have finally turned on the creepy Letterman.

He is a COMEDIAN! He makes funny jokes about popular culture, that is his job. Leave the guy alone. People have no right to get involved in his personal life. This happens quite often, yet we don't see those cases, do we? No, because the Media cherrypicks who they want to expose.

Because creepy Letterman is a "COMEDIAN!" that inoculates him from becoming the butt of the same "funny" jokes his writers used to target other celebs? How did you arrive at this logic?

Letterman is the one who decided he had to involve his audience with his creepy personal life. If you have an issue with this, then your problem is with Letterman, not his critics.

He said that he had affairs to stop the extortionist from claiming his money. He did not rub it in everyone's faces.

Celeb gossip seriously is so idiotic and pointless

Your description of Letterman's assignation with underlings is way more amusing, even if unintentional, than anything Letterman's own staff writers could have dreamed up.

The media focuses TOO MUCH on non-important issues today. There are people starving, Women getting raped, animal abusing, etc. In the world today.

You're hopeless optimism aside, that's precisely what didn't happen despite anticipation from the frothing (and self-feeding) right.
