What would our basic positions be? What would we negotiate?

To seed discussion... Abortion. I can see the perspective of people who think that abortion is murder. I don't agree, but I get where they're coming from. So... If they want to place limits on abortion... then they have to let gay and lesbian couples adopt children and they have to make contraception easily available. Seems like a reasonable starting point.

Anyone else want to play? Maybe if we get enough of a reasonable platform, we can go live with this before 2020!

Not a policy as such, but a policy on policies....

All Policies should be created with a secular basis. If the policy cannot be argued for without the involvement of God, Spirit or some other non-secular element then it should not be acceptable.

Can we end the war on drugs? That's kind of pragmatic, I guess. All of my other ideas tend to be dangerously irresponsible.

Make MJ legal to possess and use, but retain them as illegal to sell/import/or export. Harder drugs, not so sure, as they do have seriously negative health effects.

However. On the basis that to make a country great, you need a healthy and well educated population. Federally funded UNC and a federally mandated education curriculum that has major support for STEM.

Is the goal to pragmatically try and win votes with a position people support, or to simply advocate your "pragmatic ideology?

I'm not sure what letting gay and lesbian couples adopt has to do with abortion, other than that you have to put the non-aborted babies somewhere. And what kind of restrictions on abortion are you talking about?

Think about this in terms of winners and losers. Who are the losers here? Obviously women (mostly heterosexual) who want to get an abortion. Who are the winners? Gay and lesbian couples. See the problem? Your pragmatic solution doesn't help the losers at all.

How about we make abortion illegal for members of religious faiths that actively opposed abortions, and then require them to let Gays and Lesbians adopt the kids?

That seems win-win to me, and leaves the rest of us out of it.

That takes care of abortion. Woohoo!

Next!

Finally! A thread where we are supposed to think critically! We will all finally agree!

People who view abortion as murder are free to not have as many abortions as they like.

Can we be pro-Green/Renewable energy? Like wind farms and that? Seems pragmatic enough.

A truly centrist party would be a winner. Think of it as cutting off the slim one inch from one end of a bell curve, and gain an inch in the fat middle. Whichever party kicks out it's extremists will grab so many from the other party that they will win 65/35.

Pragmatist? From who's point of view?

That doesn't really address the issue for them. It only works for pro choice people because we don't consider the fetus a person with rights. Imagine if it were legal for parents to "euthanize" their child as long as the child hasn't passed the age of 6. People who view that euthanization as murder are free not to have as many euthanizations as they want. And while you or I might feel there are relevant differences between this and abortion, to them it's no different.

Is this an upper case P, e.g. the Pragmatist philosophical movement? Or is this sixth grade English class "pragmatic" as in "practical".

If it's the former, I'm your boy! Can we demonize the logical positivists and run negative ads about them?
