Last week, Iran's Majlis ratified a bill under which any Muslim who converts to another religion would be put to death, with no possibility of pardon.

The bill was approved by a majority of 196 to 7, with two abstentions.

The few Iranian media outlets that covered the issue played down their reports, while on others, such as the Majlis website and the website of the conservative daily Resalat, the reports were removed after a few hours.
Great. Abandon Islam and we'll kill you. It's no excuse that you didn't know just because we didn't tell you.

Don't you think a better title for this topic would be "Iran: 'Leave Islam and Die'" (you know, for that whole accuracy thing)?

I don't see how such a comparison is apt. This is a case of Iranian authorities trying to impose religion.

I don't thing it makes much difference this "news" occurs only in Iran. It doesn't.

The death penalty for apostasy is nothing new in Islam. It sorta reminds one of murder contracts put out on people who want to leave gangs or quit the Mafia. The only difference is the mullahs call them fatwas. It is also emblematic of murders comitted by seriously mentally ill lovers whose partner wants to break it off: the "If I can't have you no one will," kind of thing. Some folks can't accept rejection.

If an orthodox Jew marries out of the religion or converts their family "considers" them dead and even engages in a mock period of mourning. In Islam such people are actually killed by die-hard fanatic muslims. They're called "honor killings" and occur in non-Muslim as well as Muslim countries.

Sick.

I think the nine who didn't vote for the legislation should be put to death. In fact, I think anyone who doesn't think people should be put to death for what they believe or don't believe should be put to death. I'm zero tolerance all the way.

I don't think we should tolerate intolerance. Death to you, sir.

Is that dog in your avatar tolerant? Looks to me like he was bred especially to look like Hitler.

Pitbull Hitler, the most intolerant of breeds.

This is the culture, that with absolutely no precedents for self-rule, is supposed to toss all that religious crap aside and embrace democracy and self-governance.
Fat chance of that ever happening!

And remember, Christianity is just as bad.

At one time, yes.
But that has changed over the past few hundred years.
Look, I am not crazy about a lot of Christian beliefs, also. And I have a immense dislike of Christian Fundies. But to say they are just as dangerous and deadly as Muslim fanatics is ignoring reality to feed a prejudice. The last real bad outbreak of Christian violence was Northern Ireland, and even that never quite reached the insanity of the suicide bomber.

I saw the eye roll smiley, yes. That doesn't make it any less a red herring. Like I said, this is a problem with a government imposing a religion.

It's certainly not just an Iranian issue. Anyone that saw the recent Undercover Mosque: The Return in the UK will have seen the same message being preached in a UK mosque:

As hundreds of women and some children come to pray, a preacher calls for adulterers, homosexuals, women who act like men and Muslim converts to other faiths to be killed, saying: "Kill him, kill him. You have to kill him, you understand. This is Islam."]

I'm not saying that this is happening in all mosques or that all the imams are preaching this message but is an issue that I think needs to be addressed.

Wait, are we talking about the same Iran?
.
The expatriate Iranians I talk to over at the Mall are not, and vociferously that way, Muslim, and have no regard for Islam at all!
When peer pressure and just ordinary fear for one's life when speaking politically is the norm, as this vote indicates, Iran is no further advanced than Afghanistan became under the Taliban.

I don't dispute that. For the last 30 years it's basically been the Taliban's older, stronger big brother (who happen to hate the Taliban's version of Islam, but let's ignore that part for a minute). What does that have to do with Iran culturally not having a precedent of self-rule?

Theocracies, of whatever flavour, are simply not civilised forms of government. In the past there were Christian theocracies, today they are Islamic.
