lead paint & asbestos in new apt?

You might ask the owners if they're willing to chip in to an inspection in exchange for getting the results in writing.

It's a legitemate business expense for them and something of an investment, as they can offer it to future tenants.

I think you have more pressing concerns. Paying the bills, being struck down by plague or a meteoroid, stuff like that.
Don't chain saw the walls and if you do, don't eat or inhale the dust and you should be OK.

If there is asbestos in the walls then you should not even drill a hole in the walls. If there is lead in the paint then you should not repaint without taking precautions.

So yes you may need to know if there is anything dangerous in the house like this. But if all what the house means to you is a place to sleep and eat then it is no problem.
