The above YouTube video link led to a bunch of other interesting "former Mormon" videos. John Ankerberg interviews three ex-Mormons in this video, one of whom, Sandra Tanner, is actually the great-great-grand daughter of Brigham Young himself. It is almost painful to watch, as they explain how they reasoned their way out of Mormonism, largely because of their own moral sense that racism was wrong, into a type of Christianity based on the Bible.
The younger woman, the BYU professor explains how Mormons are taught to use reason in everything but faith related matters, which are to never be questioned. She also mentions that much of the BofM is just plagiarized from the Bible.

Thanks for the link, Olowkow.

There's a transcript at this youtube link.

Thanks. 'White and delightsome' is a LDS catchphrase of some type?

ETA.
Gosh. SO it appears.
And one that was changed, too.

"It’s doubtful that Joseph Smith had racism in mind when the change was done in 1840 or other similar verses would have been changed as well.

Furthermore, "white" was a synonym for "pure" at the time Joseph translated the Book of Mormon:

3. Having the color of purity; pure; clean; free from spot; as white robed innocence....5. Pure; unblemished....6. In a scriptural sense, purified from sin; sanctified. Psalm 51.[1]

Thus, the "pure" meaning likely reflected the original intent of the passage and translator. "

Here's another source on the subject

"...The claim of Mormon Indians turning white is why a Mormon LDS prophet reported to the Mormons, "I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today...they are fast becoming a white and delightsome people...The children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters on the reservation." (Spencer W. Kimball, Conf. Report, Oct. 1960, p.34) "

Amazing.

It's at 38'' and I don't get it either.
Odd, it's definitely at 48" for me.

Aha, thanks.

Indeed. I guess that explains why he rattled through the phrase, expecting it to be recognised, rather than speaking it clearly, as it was one very familiar to him as an ex-Mormon. Thanks!

There are some mormon hymns I have had in my solo piano repertoire for years.

I love, "As I Have Loved You", which structurally has more in common with a Beatles tunes, than a hymn. I do that one as an old time piano piece.

I love the structure to "Families Can Be Together Forever", very forward looking.

I do "Love at Home" in a very jaunty country piano style. Same with "Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief". I add somepep of my own to each of these.

I don't understand how boring, many of the hymns are, though. So plodding and uncreative. There are often played as if every spark of imagination and creativity has been dowsed.

I loved the songs growing up. A Poor Wayfaring Many of Grief one of my all time favorites. Same with Praise To The Man. We did sing Abide With Me but I know it predates Mormonism. Oddly enough Amazing Grace wasn't in the hymnal I grew up with but the Mormon Tabernacle sings the song. We did sing Battle Hymn of the Republic which was also a Mormon Tab favorite.

ETA: I cannot forget Ye Elders of Israel. I especially loved that song as a Mormon Missionary.

Ah, music. I agree with Dumbledore's take on music, of course.

Anyway, here's a video which combines not only the epitomy of the 'white and delightsome' but also one of George Clooney's finest moments, IMO.

Now that all the hype has died down, the books are fun to read.

As far as the audiobooks go, I prefer the Stephen Fry reading. It's a vague preference though. Jim Dale's reading has its own merits. The hostility I've read in some of the fans debating Dale vs Fry though are mind boggling. Mac vs PC debates were more polite back in the days before Mac OS X. You'd think one of them deliberately butchered and mocked the reading and got away with it for all seven volumes from the way the fans argue.

Wonder no more--I wouldn't have any qualms about referring to any of those objects as "magic" whatever, particularly if someone posted on a thread in the JREF forums defending their use. It's just all superstitious BS. I have no problem pointing that out.

In other words, you have no respect for anyone who thinks differently than you do.
