You don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes to work out why that is.
Joe Smith just wasn't that original.

It's history. It's a significant sub culture. I find it fascinating. When I was a child my mother purchased an entire set of illustrated stories from the BOM. I liked those. I thought the stories were interesting. I read the BOM cover to cover twice. Once before I left for my mission and when I was on my mission. Didn't at all care for the prose. IMO: It's a bunch of stories with as much "wisdom" as Gone With the Wind.I am not sure I would go that far........
Call me a religion non-believer.........
But I make up a small minority. Upwards of 80-90% of Americans believe in religion of one form or another.
As did the ancients. And I love history. And people. Fascinated by it and them.
Certainly not going to write the ancient Egyptians and Greeks off because they believed in sky-gods.
Hardly. They actually were pretty incredible.

Here is something fun to do. Next time you are face to face with a member, ask them if they can sing (if they know the lyrics) "Book of Mormon Stories". Now, ask the member what key lessons can be found in the BOM? Apart from Christ visiting the Americas I dare say most won't know of any. Not that Mormons are particularly dumb when it comes to religion. On the contrary, they score higher than most religious people when it comes to theology in general. Only Jews and atheists/agnostics/non religious score higher.
U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey
The pseudo-biblical ''style'' of the BOM is very funny for a while, but after a couple of chapters the eyes start to glaze over and you lose the will to live. It would sell more copies if it was sold as a cure for insomnia.
I wonder how many Mormons have read the BoM?

The coming of Jesus Christ, and the purposes of it, was known and determined in the Pre Mortal Existence... and was known by the Book of Mormon Prophets. The Gospel has been Eternal Law since the Beginning of time. Adam possessed the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ... which he taught his posterity.2 And it came to pass that the Lord did say unto me: Cry unto this people—Repent ye, and come unto me, and be ye baptised, and build up again my church, and ye shall be spared.
4 And it came to pass that after this tenth year had passed away, making, in the whole, three hundred and sixty years from the coming of Christ, the king of the Lamanites sent an epistle unto me, which gave unto me to know that they were preparing to come again to battle against us.
21 And also that ye may believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, which ye shall have among you; and also that the Jews, the covenant people of the Lord, shall have other witness besides him whom they saw and heard, that Jesus, whom they slew, was the very Christ and the very God.
Here it is 360 AD and there are Christians in the New World discussing doctrines and ideas that won't become current till many years later.
Many years ago my sister, who was a student of religion and interested in all sorts of things, actually had a copy of The Book of Mormon. I think I may still have it somewhere in my voluminous book barn. I did, in fact, try to read it, not that I expected to believe it, but I figured it might have some literary merit. Hoo boy. I truly cannot repeat the words or sentiments uttered when I very quickly gave up the effort. It's hard to express politely for sure, except to observe that if by some fantastical stretch of the imagination this stuff turned out to be dictated by some god, we'd have to acknowledge that God is not the grand thing we might have hoped for but a clown.
It works best when you ask someone to their face. Most know the songs but they don't know what doctrine is in there. They know Mormon doctrine they just don't get the connection.Ok, Mormons in this thread, what spiritual truths have you gotten from the BoM?
18th century protestant vernacular is the language spoken in the preexistence? "Fullness" By fullness they mean "not full".D&C 20:8-9 said:8And gave him power from on high, by the means which were before prepared, to translate the Book of Mormon;
9Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also;

How do you or anyone know these are the 'latter-days', and what are the latter-days?
Answer continued from my previous post:How do you or anyone know these are the 'latter-days', and what are the latter-days?
This is an extensive subject and much can be found on it within LDS Teachings and Doctrines, including in Jesus The Christ by James E. Talmage, from where I have summarised the following:

I'd call Tom Shippey a scholar.
18th century protestant vernacular is the language spoken in the preexistence? Adam spoke in 18th century vernacular?
These ad hoc explanations are not reasonable.
