Lariam (antimalarial drug) side effects

More anecdotes, but I saw no obvious adverse responses to sunlight from the doxy takers on my trip. Sensible sun protection measures (sunscreen & hats, mostly) appeared to take care of that. Some did get swollen fingers though, which is more annoying than painful.

Overlanding trips like mine are probably slightly better than average anecdotes as there is a fairly diverse group, taking a variety of medications, but otherwise eating the same food and experiencing the same weather, sleeping conditions etc. Overall I would say the (limited) side effects that were experienced were mild, to be expected from the warnings, and no-one was severely affected... but maybe we were lucky.

Perhaps next time I travel I should insist on a control group in an identical truck...

A person on Lariam, a person on doxycycline and a person on Malarone walked into a bar...

Tanja, as an Infectious Diseases physician who advises people about these things for a living, I would recommend Malarone.
Ask your GP though, as you shouldn't trust everything you read on the web!

At first glance, I thought I was being accused of something.

In the US military, I'm not sure I had a choice in what I was ordered to take. As far as I can tell though, no side effects, and no malaria. Although, as far as I can tell, I've never experienced any side effects from the myriad of pills, injections, sprays, etc. that Uncle Sam has given me. I must be lucky in that regard.
