Laptop shopping!

So: I'm getting another Windows system. My needs are simple: playing music and videos, and that's about it. I don't need a lot of the bloatware that usually comes on laptops, spreadsheets and so forth.
That probably wouldn't affect price though.

NewEgg is a good place to start, and it's search functionality is detailed enough that you can find the exact laptop for your needs.

Since you're just browsing the Internet, I suggest looking for a laptop with at least 4 GB RAM, at least 500 GB hard drive space, at least 14" screen, and Intel Core i5 processor or better.

Also make sure you read reviews on your laptop, and make sure it has all of the ports you need (HDMI, USB, etc). Definitely consider refurbished laptops too.

Here's a few laptops I found which might fit your needs, with my personal recommendation noted with a smiley:

Refurbished Dell Latitude E6420:
|Price|CPU|HDD|RAM|Screen Size|OS
| $290 |Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz|750 GB|4 GB|14"|Win7 Pro x64
| $310 |Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz|750 GB|6 GB|14"|Win7 Pro x64
:)| $320 |Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz|500 GB|4 GB|15.6"|Win7 Pro x64
| $340 |Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz|1000 GB|4 GB|14"|Win7 Pro x64
| $360 |Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz|500 GB|4 GB|14"|Win7 Pro x64

If you don't like refurbished laptops, Acer Aspire laptops are very good:
|Price|CPU|HDD|RAM|Screen Size|OS
| $310 |Intel Celeron 1.83 GHz x4|500 GB|4 GB|14"|Win8.1 x64
:)| $350 |Intel Celeron 2.16GHz x4|500 GB|4 GB|15.6"|Win8.1 x64
| $373 |Intel Pentium 1.70 GHz x4|500 GB|4 GB|15.6"|Win7 Home Premium x64
| $398 |Intel Pentium 2.40GHz x4|500 GB|4 GB|17.3"|Win7 Home Premium x64
| $400 |Intel Pentium 2.16GHz x4|500 GB|4 GB|14"|Win8.1 x64

Asus also makes a nice inexpensive laptop:
|Price|CPU|HDD|RAM|Screen Size|OS
:)| $320 |Intel Baytrail 2.16 GHz x2|500 GB|4 GB|15.6"|Win8.1 x64

If you don't mind spending a lot of money, I would recommend:

Name|Price|CPU|HDD|RAM|Screen Size|OS|Notes
ASUS X555| $793 |Intel Core i7 2.0GHz|1000 GB|8 GB|15.6"|Win8.1 x64|Good specs, this laptop will hold on to it's quality for a long time
Lenovo U530| $989 |Intel Core i7 2.0GHz|1000 GB|8 GB|15.6"|Win8.1 x64|Has an NVidia graphics card, allowing 1920x1080 resolution, better than the laptops above. Touchscreen adds about $200 to the price of this laptop.
MSI GS60| $1100 |Intel Core i7 2.5GHz|1000 GB|8 GB|15.6"|Win8.1 x64|Decent gaming laptop for the price
Gigabyte P35| $2139 |Intel Core i7 2.6GHz|1000 GB HDD / 128 GB SDD|16 GB|15.6"|Win 8.1 x64|Gaming laptop with exceptional specs, but you could build a better gaming PC for the same price

I have the equivalent to the one in Dessi's first table, the one with the emoticon.

It's about three years old and has had only one problem, the hard disk failed about 15 months ago. Unfortunately, it was out of warranty by then. My local computer repair shop replaced it. Hardware and labor together were about $125.

Even with that extra expense, I think I got a good deal.

For backup, I bought a Western Digital Elements 1TB drive from Newegg for under $60. (I deleted the backup software that was on the drive and wrote a robocopy.bat file to copy only the files I want.)

Gonna replace my old Gateway from '07.
That's right, I run em into the ground. Have been using workarounds to keep the one I have functioning.

My old laptop has listed 452 gig capacity. The replacement has to have at least that.

Obviously I'm way out of the loop. Fielding all recommendations ASIDE FROM "Buy some stupidly overpriced shiny Apple product for idiots with more money than sense."
