Laptop recommendations?

I have two Sony notebooks - a lightweight 13" Y-series and a heavyweight 15" E-series.

I'm very happy with both of them, except for the keyboard on the E-series, which is slightly smaller than standard size and a bit cramped. On the other hand, it has the best screen I have ever seen on a notebook: 1920x1080 and exceptionally clear and vivid. Also has a Radeo 5650, so it handles games pretty well.

A netbook would be fine if all he was doing was school work. But I figure he'll want something he can play games on once the homework is done.

I still had money left over for a PS3

But no games and I'm not very confident in its ability to handle photoshop. I haven't bothered even trying.

With the price point and the features I've been impressed with Acer. There's a 15" laptop that went on sale for about $350 out the door. I'd consider one for the price.

Good luck though, I've been looking for computers for the last several months for different people. There's a million different combinations resulting in a million different prices. In order to get a deal you really need to know what features they have and what they are worth to you. They change the processor, or the hard drive or the RAM or the video card or the number of USB and HDMI connections and all end up around the same price and neither is "better" than the other.

Just wanted to recommend that you check out NewEgg for reviews if you narrow down to a few models. The reviews tend to be a bit more sophisticated than your typical Amazon offering.

Very thorough reviews and catogories and a customizable comparison feature.

Or use them both. As mentioned... with so many options, the hardest part is deciding when to pull the trigger and reach for the credit card.
