LA Skeptic Gathering

The computer is no longer playing dead, so here I am again.

I'm locatated in Fullerton and do have car and licence, so I can drive people.

My original idea was the fish market at Ports of Call, but all the shops around it are closed, alas. Some other ideas include the Third Street Promenade, Downtown Disney (though I doubt OC will wind up being "central"), Phillipe's/Alvera Street, Chinatown for Dimsum (if they do that on Saturdays- I have no idea) and the winery that Wyvern mentioned. There are surely other places.

Heck, we can probably even meet at my parent's place if necessary (though again, OC...).

I'll start PMing people who have listed themselves as in the area.

I just called Empress Pavillion (my favorite dimsum place in Chinatown) and they say they have dimsum service Saturdays 8 am-2pm. I have only been there for Sunday lunch, and it is a lot of fun, but does get crowded around noon, and there is a wait.

Olvera street is walking distance from Chinatown, so if people want to hang out that can be done also. Phillipes is also great. I think traffic will be a nightmare for Santa Monica on Saturday, and personally I am not terribly keen on Disney Downtown, also because I would have to fight crowds to get there. However, any of these places would work for me :) I just have a craving for dimsum, but I can satisfy it on my own Sunday :D :D Additional bonus would be- no need to pretend to have social graces while lunging after goodies. :)

Chi just let me know about it in Pal Talk. I'll try to be there if schedule permits. :D

OK, current plan is 11 am at the Empress Pavillion. Of course, suggestions are still welcome.

More PM's going out...

Hey! Just picked up Loon's PM. I think I can come to Empress Pavilion on Saturday. Sure would love to meet some of you!!

11 AM's a bit early...then again, I'd say the same about 3 PM. How's parking around there, or would it be easier to take the Gold Line?

You can find parking on the street, and there is parking in the large structure the restaurant is in. Sundays it is free, don't know about Saturdays.

The early morning thing is a fair point. However, I think it's also fair to say that things may not be limited to lunch. I'd imagine that some people will stick around and enjoy the sights or wander the shops or something.

If anyone wants to come late, PM me. I don't think I gave everyone my cell #.

Presuming I have no family visiting that day (It's more annoying than you can imagine) I still have to take my kittens in for their second tapeworm shot and I have a few questions for the vet.

So if I'm there (Loon, I'll give you a call this evening with an answer on that so you won't be expecting "someone else") I would likely be able to get there via the Metro at just about 1PM.

Look forward to it :)

For those who haven't met me, I will probably be wearing my TAM2 tshirt. PM me if you want my cell number so we can meet up at the place.

I think people will meet each other by the entrance (which is on the second floor of the complex) and once we have a critical mass, get a table. Latecomers call us and we will guide you to the appropriate place. Look for a brownhaired woman in a TAM2 shirt who is tackling dimsum carts. Mmmm....dimsum.....

Hi all,

Just checked in on the forum and got the PM from Loon. I'll be there at 11, or as soon as the OC/LA traffic will permit.

If Renata's wearing her TAM2 t-shirt, then I guess I'll wear my TAM1 t-shirt so we don't look like twins again!

Dang! Haven't had dimsum in a many-a-year.

I called Loon about fourty-five minutes ago on this and left a voicemail, but here's the gist of it"

When I brought my kittens in, I asked if about when they could be fixed and the vet said, "Oh they're definitely ready now. I can do it today." and we figured sooner was better than later.

We're picking them up in about an hour and a half, so there's no way I could really make the meet.

I'm sorry I couldn't be there and I hope you all are having a wicked good time.

I spend a week In LA, and now after getting out of town I find out that there is an LA meeting? Dam you fickle finger of Fate.

Hey, just wanted to say it was fun meeting some of you in Chinatown for a beautiful dim sum lunch and conversation. I'm sure I will see you again! :)

For those who went to the Body Worlds exhibit: You can request free promotional material if you claim to be a health care professional. Includes brochures (probably the same ones we picked up) and up to 3 free posters.

A good time was had by all.

I also notice that everyone was rushing home to post about it. :)

It was wonderful to meet everyone (except renata, who I'd met before and so could not really meet this time, but rather meet. And that was pretty cool, too.)

Alas, LostAngeles and Marian didn't make it. But getting the kitties fixed is very important, and they need to be tended to for the whole day. Though we had dinner at 10:00 and only then went home.

Good fun,

It was a great pleasure to meet you all.

My wife and I had a great time. My wife is considering making her first post to personally thank you all, we'll have to wait and see if that actually happens.

Hey everybody! It was great seeing all of you, whether for the first time or the Nth.

The dimsum was tasty and the conversation lively. (Yes, we talked about the forums a lot.) The wait-staff was eyeing us rather pointedly towards 3pm when we left, but there was just so much to say, right?

I seem to have sunburned my neck during the march to Olvera Street and back, but little enough harm done for a nice hike after lunch.

The Body Worlds exhibit was simply fascinating! (CNN Article). Anyone who is not too squeamish about such things will find it very worthwhile going, if it comes to your town.

Renata was quite brave, and joined Wyvern, rwald, Loon, and myself for the exhibit, but we could not convince her to go eat ribs afterward. Something about us being real sickos.

OK, so we skipped the ribs anyway and ended up at Panda Express, the opposite end of the Chinese culinary spectrum from the Empress Pavillion. Suddenly, it's 10pm and time to go home.

Bottom line: We gotta do this more often...
