Bill approved by vote of 65-33 now requires either Knesset super-majority or a national referendum in order to hand over any annexed territories as part of future peace deal.
The Knesset passed the National Referendum Law during a late-night session Monday, approving legislation that will fundamentally alter Israeli negotiators’ ability to offer concrete peace deals involving the Golan Heights or east Jerusalem.

The law, which was approved by a vote of 65-33, will require either a Knesset super-majority or a national referendum in order to hand over any annexed territories as part of a future peace deal.

Interesting how many left-wingers are against this law.

I actually support this law. Its on the side of democracy and the right of the people to choose the fate of their country. Just like how the end to Apartheid was put to a referendum by the white population of South Africa.

If the Israelis are going to leave the West Bank, the Golan, and parts of East Jerusalem, this decision should be made by the people of Israel. Not just politicians.

Yes, this may kill the chances for peace.

....or it may increase them. If polls shows 50%+ support for leaving most of the WB, all of the Golan, and the Arab parts of East Jerusalem, while right-wing politicians say no, Bibi or whomever else will know that he has the people on his side, if not the extremists.

Interesting development.

uhhh, I din't think Israel actually annexed those territories.

I think they should have, and either made the Palestinians citizens or kicked their asses back across the border. Keep the land, as spoils of war. Or even do the old testament schtick, slay them all. This fish or fowl don't cut it.

But the Knesset don't listen to me.

Israel DID annex Jerusalem and the Golan heights. It did NOT annex Gaza or the WB in general. That is why the Knesset can pass an Israeli law that would be in force about those areas.

Syria shouldn't get the Golan back because it's a Baathist tyranny and a terrorist state.

Israel shouldn't give away the Golan heights because it is elevated terrain. It's a natural defensive position and artillery base.

It's strategically sound thinking to hold on to it.

right. cause in the days of instant satellite imagery, early warning stations, stealth fighter jets, and guaruntees of security from the USA, Israel simply cannot afford to not have the high ground.

the Syrian army is just soooo advanced and highly trained. with the Golan, they could invade and destroy northern Israel in a heartbeat.

;)

Israel has advanced spy satellites, stealth fighters, and if they give up the Golan, a guaruntee of total American defense if they are ever attacked.

early warning stations will also be installed on the Golan. a conventional Syrian attack using tanks and troops would be all but useless and pointless.

now, why don't you tell us why you REALLY wanna keep the Golan.

could it be the lovely ski slopes and mountains?

could it be the wineries, waterfalls, and scenic nature?

could it be the eastern shore of the Galilee?

;)

anyone who knows a thing about Israel, knows why they REALLY don't want to let go of the Golan. Its a lovely place.

I couldn't agree more, although the bolded bit of what you wrote is the problem. Most Palestinians would be happy to have Israeli citizenship but the problem is the so-called demographic time bomb supposedly threatening Israel's identity as a ethnically/religiously pure state.
