Okay, so we're bringing the Peanut with us to TAM. We're also bringing a sitter, but even so, we'd like advice from anyone else who has done the child-at-TAM thing. We'd also like to chat with anyone else who is planning on bringing their offspring to TAM this year.

She's a pretty grown-up 9 year old--she'll be almost 10 by July--but I don't think she can sit through most of the lectures. But what, other than baking by the pool, does a kid and her escort do in Las Vegas in the summer?? She'll be doing Penn & Teller with us, of course, but what else is worth doing?

Anybody interested in doing family-friendly stuff while in Vegas, or is it going to be strictly a bar scene?

Oh, there's lots of fun kid stuff at Excalibur (slightly closer to the hotel) and Circus Circus (quite a bit farther from the hotel), at least! I think most of the big hotels have at least a little something. Some have zoos and aquariums.

I don't have any kids, myself. But, sometimes I feel like one, when in Vegas.

(Too bad ST:The Experience closed, that would have soaked up a half a day of time or so).

There's bowling and a movie theater in the South Point complex, so that's a couple of afternoons right there.

And a day trip to Hoover Dam is cool.
 
I'm not 100% sure about this -- in fact, I'm not even 50% sure about it -- but I think there's a kids-must-be-at-least-12 rule for attending TAM. Of course, that would only apply to the conference itself and would certainly not preclude anyone from parking their under-12 offspring at a blackjack table from 9am - 5pm.
 
Circus Circus started the whole kid thing years ago and has taken it to perfection. Horribly tacky and corny....perfect for any kid. A bit far away, but worth some time.
 
We will have the World's Best Sitter with us, and she is a responsible adult, so I'll look into Circus Circus. She'd love an aquarium and maybe seeing the white tigers, too. But they do have to be indoor stuff, that 105-degrees F plus weather will melt my little Seattle girl!

I'll look into the age limit thing. I was told it was 10-and-over, but maybe it is 12.

Things you do not have to be an adult to do in Las Vegas that haven't been mentioned yet:

- Indoor skydiving (40 lb. weight limit, she should be old enough)
- Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay
- Dolphin/tiger habitat at The Mirage
- Roller coasters at New York New York or the Sahara
- Video arcade, museum, and IMax theater at the Luxor
- Hiking/cruising around Mt. Charleston (will be much cooler than the city)
- Water sports at Lake Mead (public) or Lake Las Vegas (private, but has public access)
- Bonnie Springs (You will need a car, and it will be hot, but the petting zoo, horseback riding, and Wild West show will be worth it. You can always have an ice cream at the snack bar to cool off.)
- Light show at Fremont Street (after dark)
- Street vendors/musicians at Fremont Street (stop in the Main Street Station for real brewed root beer with lunch)
- Pirate ship fight at TI (after dark)

Yes, I do go to Las Vegas too often for work and look for non-gambling entertainment at times. Why do you ask?
 
Hokulele has a much different memory of Bonnie Springs than I do.....
 
I need to remind people of something: We're from Seattle!! We don't do Hot and Sunny, as in over 90 F and requiring SPF 45 and up. She'd cook like a little skinny sausage, poor thing!

I should look and see if there's an ice rink, though. She's an experienced figure skater...

Tigers and dolphins would be right up her alley, for sure. As would the aquarium. Plus, she'll have to nap the night we do P&T's show, which she will do because she thinks Teller is godlike. (It has to do with seeing him do magic on Fantasia 2000 DVD--plus, hey, she has good taste.) She will also bring some books along.

Miss Kitt, according to the registration page that just went up, the conference is 12-and-up only. :(
 
Mac King. I know it was suggested already but my little nephew and niece LOVED his afternoon show.

There is also a candy factory/store that gives tours I think? THat would be quite a lot of fun.
 
if there isn't a water park then it's pretty sad.

Also my daughter when she went at age 12 found it very exciting to collect "ho cards". Hey, they give them to EVERYONE. You can teach your daughter to play "ho fish"
 
We do not offer childcare as part of TAM, and I called the casino and they said they don't either. I asked if there were anything in the area, and they put me on Moebius hold... I'll check in again later and see what I can find. If anyone else has information, please post it here, as I'm sure others are interested too.
 
My son Travis, who was 20 at the time and obviously not (chronologically) a child, was pretty shocked by the 'ho cards and other obvious displays of prostitution et al. And he's not a prude.

He wrote a paper about it for his English Comp class and got an "A".

I just operated on the assumption that I'd need to bring my own childcare, and arranged accordingly. Everywhere I went in Vegas seemed to have a fair percentage of tired, happy parents with somewhat bored kids in tow--even at eleven at night--so if there's childcare about, it's neither easy to find nor cheap.

I'm too old-fashioned to trust a hotel childcare service anyway. I don't like my kid parked in front of a TV for hours at a time...
