Kevin Trudeau Banned From Infomercials For Three Years

Did you hear?

Kevin Trudeau has been fined $5 million, equivalent to the royalties of his book "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You To Know About" AND banned from doing infomercials AND banned from publishing books that sell any type of product for three years. This stems from a 2004 ruling in which Trudeau was found guilty of false advertising over Coral Calcium and Biotape, where he was told that he could no longer make misleading infomercials. Apparently ignoring the courts order, Trudeau immediately went off to make misleading infomercials. In 2007 he was found to be in contempt, a ruling which was upheld just last month. I don't know if Trudeau has any other legal tactics he can employ, but he should be in good shape as long as he follows his own advice in "Debt Cures 'They' Don't Want You To Know About"

See the FTC press release at "FTC Press Releases 'They' Don't Want You To Know About".

That's a win for the good guys! :D

My local cable channel puts on lots of his stuff.
I'll be interested to see if they continue.
I just called them... Time-Warner, asking them why they continue to show his stuff... :)

This won't affect one thing. He will be off TV but will continue to sell his books and woo to the detriment of society.

Time Warner's response to my question as to why Trudeau's informercials appear on the local TIME WARNER channel!
"Unfortunately, Time Warner has no control over the programming that
appears on any one channel and we make every effort to provide you with
a high quality cable service. "

This is true. Your cable company does not control the content of the channels it includes in it's service. If you really want to follow up on this kind of thing, you'd need to contact the channels themselves.

I was going to dispute this, but you're correct. While the cable company has control over which commercials are aired* it does not have control over infomertials which basically are half-hour programs purchased for air from the individual stations/networks**.

* If you ever see a commercial start then cut to another it's an example of sloppy editing/signal overlay.

** Now that I think about it, the at&t U-verse lab at my work runs network feeds without interruption all night, but at home in the 3-5am block some of them run informertials (like History channel at 4am).

Only three?

Can't the FTC find its testicles and try a more permanent solution?

There's still a whole segment of the population who don't think for themselves. Infomercials look like news programs and just by virtue of being on TV lends credibility to the product because the government wouldn't really allow lies to be told on TV would they? Nah. That would never happen.

Maybe he's just not allowed to make new ones? The old ones just run on and on?

Well, then, getting fleeced for being stupid is okay then :p Trudeau is RICH! If infomercials look like news to some people, then maybe they exist to give their money away to people who are smarter than them :D
